-Speed governors on all automobiles
-nationalize and electrify our rail network
-trillions for transit expansion
-national design standards that focus on traffic calming existing streets
-the removal of most downtown expressways
Now that we're in Woke 3.0, what's your dream transportation policy or idea? Sure, ban cars, but what would you like to see in your fantasy version of events? There are no wrong answers, only good and absolutely outstanding answers. Go for it.

Notice the construction around the Lincoln Tunnel and Dyer Avenue? That’s the new $11 billion Port Authority Bus Terminal taking shape.

Steel girders are going up to create “deckovers” above the expressways, which will open up three-and-a-half acres of new public green space for the neighborhood.

The absolute and complete gutting of urban expressways, and all that follows from that. Every city I have lived in (Boston, Baltimore, Providence, Rochester) is worse off because of their presence

In concept it dates back to the 50s but it was expected to be more median-running on 57 and 94. The expressways were constructed anticipating rapid transit (and still have extra-wide medians as far as 119th on 57), but the earliest reference to running via the UPRR corridor I could find was 2003

On this day in 1960, what we now call the Kennedy and Eisenhower Expressways opened, with the governor saying, "Chicago has been stifled by bottlenecks, the worst in the nation. Those bottlenecks are now broken."

So much for that ... chicago.suntimes.com/the-watchdog...
Kennedy Expressway traffic is still a nightmare after 3 years of work
A WBEZ/Sun-Times investigation confirms one driver's lament that it was "the worst traffic I've ever had to deal with." Worse yet, epic delays persist — a year after a three-year construction project ...

Westerners gush about China’s fast, comfortable trains, often contrasting them with the dilapidated state of their own rail networks. Register to read why it might all be too much

Was red-lining wrong? Was creating expressways across Black neighborhoods and leaving white ones untouched wrong? Was a race to sell a house before property values decreased wrong? My grandparents lived in an area that became largely black. They stayed. They lived. The area eventually changed again

That I knew from previous posts, but you said you were taking a trip on one of the expressways which means you're heading South or maybe only to Yilan. If you are going to Tainan (the city not the country side) I could provide some suggestions.

This sounds a little insane, but the amount of potholes on paved roads and expressways is actually close to zero in China.

Driving on the roads in China versus the roads in America is a very different experience.

Nairobi’s Chinese-built roads have reshaped the city’s transport network, but gridlock remains a daily punishment for motorists, exposing the limits of infrastructure projects that fail to address the wider urban transport crisis.

Tbh all expressways should be tolled with the caveat that it’s a public agency and not a private corporation collecting the tolls.

it can be done as far out as the elevated expressways shoot we can make the entirety of New Orleans pedestrian/cycle only

I dream it!

He was honest: there's more pushback on bike lanes now than a couple of years ago. People who drive blame bike lanes and pedestrian streets for congestion.

But no new expressways are coming. A city of 4 million can't keep moving if most trips stay in single-occupant cars.

In the south-western province of Guizhou, the Huajiang bridge straddles a yawning valley hemmed in by steep mountains. It is a mind-boggling feat of engineering. Fewer such marvels are likely to be built

The one thing you can always count on - even more than traffic being absolute shit on area expressways during rush hour - is that there isn't a tech opinion coming out of Altman's mouth that won't make you cringe *outwardly*.

Again and again….Doug Ford has turned our expressways and roads into speeding go-kart lanes. The weight of those transport trucks and trailers was never meant for speed as they go way over their speed limit .
In the past two weeks six people died in the carnage.

Learning from cities like Vancouver and Amsterdam that rejected expressways and those that have converted waterfront expressways to better uses in SF, Seoul, Boston should drive the @illinoisdot.bsky.social/CDOT planning process and not be dismissed as foreign innovation that won't work in Chicago.
