Updating the #IUCN status of marine fish using AI shows that x5 more species are threatened with extinction than previously thought!

see our study in Plos Biol with @nloiseau.bsky.social

👉 doi.org/10.1371/jour...

🔑 This silent extinction affects 12,7% of marine fishes (1337 species) !

Something for (sub) #FossilFriday!

Saw a beautiful pair of solitaire skeletons at the Hunterian. These birds were basically the island of Rodrigues' equivalent of a dodo.

Also large, also flightless, also driven to extinction by European colonists 🦤🧪🦉

I have nothing profound to say for my first post, except that I have made real academic and research connections on the other platform—generating knowledge, jobs, publications, collaborations and friendships. So my sole hope here is that we might all save those networks from extinction🦤🦤🦤

De-extinction, and the language we use to frame it.

❌ don’t say “bringing back the mammoth” [or whatever 🦤]

☑️ do say “testing whether we can synthetically create specific desired phenotypes”

#ColossalBio keeps on keeping on with their #DeExtinction #DisInformation campaign. Their GMOs aren't #DeExtinct species; they're just making designer transgenic animals. 🦣 🦤🐺 🧟 🧪

New research suggests the #extinction crisis may be even worse than we thought. More than half of species that have so far evaded any official conservation assessment are threatened with extinction. S...

Despite Biotech Efforts to Revive Species, Extinction Is Still Forever
In the last decade, laboratory initiatives to recreate long-extinct species have stirred controversy. Now, scientists increasingly agree "de-extinction" is not possible, but breeding living animals wi...

1/2 #MammalTudesday The Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber) is a remarkable architect of its environment, renowned for its ability to engineer entire ecosystems through dam-building. Once near extinction due to overhunting, conservation efforts have led to their recovery across Europe 🦊🦤🌍🦫

This is what happens in the beginning of a mass extinction: chaos as each species responds individualistically to its requirements for survival. Range shifts, establishment of refugia, even expansion of environmentally tolerant species are parts of the breakdown of ecosystems.

Our new Nature Eco Evo paper documents range shifts in 1,758 butterfly species across 105 countries, primarily due to climate change.

🦋80% expanded
🦋27% contracted
🦋22% shifted elevation
🦋342 showed multiple shift types.
