Decided to work through #TidyTuesday this week (focusing on Dungeons and Dragons monsters), and played around with some of the dragon data! Had a lot of fun playing around with different fonts this time using package 'extrafont' :)

With the end of #rstats extrafont, is showtext/sysfonts now the best way to use custom fonts with ggplot? Or maybe systemfonts?

Well, the one way I know the week has not been *all* bad is that this has been at the top of the Quarto project doc I've been hacking on all week. Gotta take solace in the little things even more — now.

counterpoint: going down the rabbit hole to get extrafont running properly on every machine you use for your favorite font is always worth it

Based on the CRAN revdeps I got, the issue seems extremely easy to fix
As for extrafont, that is somewhat harder, but systemfonts now does most of that work (except work with pdf() and the windows png device).
I'll be happy to supply a PR to keep it around

I wish I had found it earlier! I went down the route of {sysfonts} (inconveniently different from {systemfonts}), to {showtext}, to {extrafont}… Nothing quite worked at providing fonts with a package on load and all were too similarly named 😅

@JorisMeys I'd def be up for it, but haven't even assessed how much work the necessary changes for {ggplot2} is let alone uncoupling {extrafont} (which is the reason for the other pkg situation) and having to compensate with more documentation.

@JorisMeys I'd def be up for it, but haven't even assessed how much work the necessary changes for {ggplot2} is let alone uncoupling {extrafont} (which is the reason for the other pkg situation) and having to compensate with more documentation.
