We faculty need to seize this moment—faculty and students are united on keeping this stuff out of higher education.
The Daily Princetonian has published some student reactions to the announcement that the university is giving them all ChatGPT access and -- as most teachers will tell you -- none of the students actually want this garbage.

Those motherfuckers belong in prison for what they've done to their students and faculty
I wonder how all those university administrations that axed their DEI initiatives last year are feeling this morning

Faculty Senate is up there.
Nothing tests your love for democracy like the annual meeting of your co-op building.

We have a democratic governor in Texas:

Gina Hinojosa, who staked her campaign on public education.

The governor appoints university regents, who have been destroying our universities.

This win meaningfully changes things for Texas universities, students, us early career faculty here.

No. It is the faculty who do the teaching and research that defines the institution. They are the professional. They must be in charge. Not your local bank ceo. Democratic governors must appoint faculty to university boards.

Hey, journalists, anyone interested in picking this up?

Faculty / students SUCCESSFULLY pushing back on an administrative attempt to enforce a year-round $chedule --

I know one of the main faculty organizers against the year round thing, can get you access to all those folks--
Cal Poly delays year-round operations after objections from faculty, students
The new calendar won’t be implemented until the summer of 2029.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much shit that parents across texas have been fighting tooth and nail is going to go away and oh my god it feels so good

BTW if you think there aren’t enough faculty at your institution to do the intense work of governance while also doing research, teaching, and service then that’s a sign that your institution needs to fucking hire more faculty.

Thank you, Pete Buttigieg, for standing with Minnesota and joining Peggy, Keith and me today!

Pete knows what’s at stake on Tuesday. As the sign says, VOTE!

When I was a graduate student, I would spend two weeks on a 15-minute conference talk. As a faculty member, I spend 2 hours on a 75-minute lecture. When I was a student, I used to think that this was because faculty members didn't care; now I know that it is because faculty members are BUSY.

A properly run university has faculty setting policy, staff and admin helping implement that policy, and a president raising money to support those policies without questioning them.
The most honest response is that well-paid and treated staffers do, so a properly run university has the president setting policy not running operations.

solicit the patina of faculty consent through handpicked special committees, townhall-style consultation theater, & vestigial, largely impotent faculty governance structures to steer university priorities” — i mean, i get that “AI” is shorter, but come on guys let’s do some journalism

7. What is your credit rating? (for private, smaller colleges)
8. Are faculty and/or staff able to join a union?
9. Does faculty have representation on your board of trustees?
10. How does teaching factor into tenure and promotion? (at R1's)
November 3, 2026 at 12:49 AM
The good kind, with real libraries and plenty of faculty and staff!
November 4, 2026 at 7:13 PM
Even at research-focused places (R1 and R1-aspiring) there are faculty who embed those traits in their practice, but they are often contingent or junior t/t faculty who feel unsupported, even looked down upon, for doing so. This also applies to most staff. And that absolutely has to change.

I do a lot of talks and workshops centering things like fostering student belonging, and embedding humane-ness and humanity into teaching and faculty life. There is a clear difference, depending on institutional type, in how (and whether) faculty believe they have the support to do those things.
