At least partially because millions of ordinary Americans are obsessed with the "undeserving" getting any benefit even if they themselves would also benefit and they vote accordingly. It's of course deeply tied to racism but also an outgrowth of Calvinism & the just world fallacy.

Do you not see the fallacy in the point you are trying to make? Is the UK actually united if a majority in Scotland don’t want to be part of the UK? Is it ok that a minority in Scotland requires that the “simple majority” says “that’s fine then, let’s stay in the UK so you don’t get upset”
