the main reason i find fantasy lacking as a genre is that there is exactly one fantasy plot worth telling and we already got to it with Tolkien and it is "satan ran across the icy tundra, pursued by the giant spider who wanted to eat all his diamonds"

fantasy isn't actually a very good genre, or rather good fantasy is uniquely difficult to write.
