Great Blue Heron in watercolor

On a walk to Lake Washington, I spotted a Great Blue Heron flying and foraging near the shoreline. This inspired me to paint a heron in my watercolor sketchbook.

American crow in watercolor

Crows have shiny feathers that reflect rich colors in the area. So I had fun painting this clever corvid.

Great Blue Heron painting

Great blue heron artwork looks stunning in waves shimmering light from an old window. One of my first bird paintings is still a favorite.

Tree Swallow in watercolor

Swallows remind me of conducting field observations when I worked in the UW Bird Communication Lab. Watching the swallows fly around Union Bay Natural Area catching insects in flight was fun.

Week 1: Pied - Pied Avocet

Pied Avocets are a great conservation success story: extinct in the UK during the 19th century, they were given a lifeline during the World War II when it was able to recolonise the beaches of East Anglia.

Today is the start of my #Feathruary art with prompts by @mischievousredfox.bsky.social and Project Parlor. Enjoy my Rainbow-billed Toucan (Multicolored) named for its vibrant colors. This large beak is great for nipping fruit off trees, tossing it into the air, and swallowing the meal whole.
