It almost felt like a pilgrimage to Adam. Though Ellie was thrilled to run around with her new attire and bag, for him, it was quite a solemn trip. How long would it take for them to find anything? What if this world only had rocks, plants, insects and animals…? This would be a trip he could be doing for decades to come, and he sure wasn’t ready for it. As they climbed higher up, they could start seeing the horizon better. It was painfully obvious now that the moon circling them was bringing storms everywhere it went. It wasn’t so much that it was sticking to oceans more than the oceans created themselves due to the moon’s constant pressure onto its path, digging trenches around the planet. Augie explained it as the reason the water wasn’t actually that salty like sea water, there was too much movement to give time for salt to collect. Whatever that meant, Adam was in no way a nature expert. Everyday, on the dot, the storm would return. And despite being further and further from the ocean, they still had to deal with its wind and its rain, the fishes flying like fireworks. Their days were shorter as they had to find places to hide before the storm could take them, so they mostly walked during the night for a few hours until they could find another place to call shelter. It was tiring, but what else could they do? One evening, as they found a higher plateau where the rain didn’t collect as much, they spotted something else. Or rather, two things.

The explorer was annoying him. He was cheerful, happy-go-lucky, sometimes mimicking Ellie’s excited energy naturally. It was making Adam feel like crying, or maybe punch something, he wasn’t sure. Ellie kept returning to Adam, but Adam couldn’t get in the mood to play with her. So she kept turning her back on him and choosing the excited human, who was all too happy to help her enjoy life. It was only making Adam feel worse. The storm was intense, but inside the cave, they were more or less safe with the exception of a few gusts of winds that would suddenly rain on them before leaving again. Since there was no way they could find food again, Adam gave another granola bar to Ellie. No meal for him or August. “I think the little girl wants to play with you.” August tried as he carried Ellie towards him, making her shake left and right and giggle. Adam looked away. “Don’t feel like it.” He signed. “Ah but why not? We are all stuck in here until the storm clears anyway, might as well have some fun, no?” He replied. “Kya!” Ellie approved. Fun. Fun fun fun. Fun while stuck? While stressed out and alone, while his family probably had heart attacks trying to get them out of there? Really? He had better things to think about than to have fun right now.

“Ooooh, Daddy, loo!” Ellie squeaked. Adam grunted, his grip on her slipping as she flipped in his arms, her hands making grabby fingers for the spots of purple, pink and white across the floor. He pulled her back up, his other hand tightly holding the onesie that was waving with the wind like a flag. A very fluffy flag. “Maybe you should let her explore.” August suggested. And potentially eat those random plants? Was he crazy? “You can’t keep her in your hands forever. Trust me, when I had to keep April as a kid, if I didn’t let her go somewhere, she’d find a way to get there on her own when I wasn’t watching.” He pointed out. “At least right now we can keep an eye on her.” Hmm, well… He wasn’t wrong there… Nnnng… Aaaaah, alright. But he’d be keeping the strongest eye he ever could on her.

No no no no no. He didn’t want to be stuck in that world. He didn’t want his little one to be stuck in that world. He needed to be safe at home right now, she needed to be safe at home all the time. And right now, he had neither, and he was stuck with a human he still didn’t know much about except for the fact that he had no survival instincts! Aaaaarg! “Are you alright, son?” The senseless explorer asked. No, he wasn’t alright. He was stressed, and angry, and afraid for him and his little one. This world was not meant for her, why did today have to be so bad??

“What? A-” April’s words died in the air as the window opened fast enough to threaten breaking its glass. Adam was a blur as only one thought resonated within him. Get his little one away from the stranger! “Adam, stop! It’s okay, he’s-” Snap! He only noticed he’d bitten April’s forearm when the taste of copper made it to his tongue. He blinked a few times, the world returning to him in waves. April was holding her own arm, worry and fear visible on her face. Behind her, Casey gripped her shoulders protectively, ready to intervene if needed. Intervene against Adam.

Adam tensed. He guessed he didn’t want to fight any of the turtles and he didn’t get them. But Usagi… After his time in his world, he considered Usagi like his teacher, his master in a way, but the right type of master, the one that guided and trained in a friendly way rather than through brute force and torture. And now, he would have to beat him in fair combat, viewed by everyone watching… It would not be easy to defeat him. “Breathe, all fights begin with the lungs.” Usagi told him, his wakizashi slowly being pulled out of its sheath. Adam took a deep breath with a nod. Usagi was right, he needed to remember his training. Heh, he almost laughed at that. He’d trained way more on how to remain calm rather than on how to fight, because that was his weakness. It was true, but had it really helped, or had it only made him more nervous about the upcoming event? He wasn’t sure anymore.

“Each three years, a champion is elected and a statue erected in their name.” Leo told him. Adam stopped in front of a series of identical human-like statues. He pointed to them. “Those were the ninja tribunal, actually.” Don explained. “The group of mystics that trained us to defeat the tengu Shredder. One of the statues was actually removed after one of the members betrayed them centuries ago.” Case in point, he waved at an empty pedestal, where a single helmet resided, left on the flat surface. The name was scratched at the front of it. “And here is the most important statue!” Mikey exclaimed. He rushed in front of a suspiciously recognizable one, taking in the same pose as it had. “Tada! What’d you think?” Adam paused in between Mikey’s statue and Leo’s. Both looked similar to each other, but the poses had been purposefully changed to differentiate them, unlike the tribunal group. “Very cool.” He told them. “You sure it’s safe?” “Yeah yeah, it’s fine!” Mikey waved off in that way that meant that it could very well be dangerous but he didn’t care. Adam was not convinced. “But don’t I look super heroic?” Adam nodded. He guessed so.

The entrance they had to take was close to where their lair used to be and where April’s apartment was, but not close to their current home, so they left the battle shell behind April’s building and continued on foot. The alley they went into looked exactly the same as all others, boring walls covered in ugly graffiti, trash alongside the walls reeking of decomposition, the street lamps just barely giving a hallowed light filled with shadows through the place… In a way, it was home. Adam waited, like a fly on the wall, while Don scribbled down a complicated logo with chalk on the furthest wall. Then Leo took place in front of the sigil, murmuring words in a guttural language Adam couldn’t dream of ever understanding. It sounded like nothing more than illegible grumbles to him but he’d heard Usagi mumbled the same before, and it created the same type of portal like a secret password. Adam took a deep breath, the blue light of the portal making him look more teal than green. He glanced at each of the others, who gave him encouraging smiles and waves. And then he jumped in.

“Waaaaaah!” Ellie exclaimed as she spotted the colorful boxes and bags they placed by the coffee table. “Wed!” “Woah hey, you can’t choose a gift already!” Mikey exclaimed. “Don’t you want the orange one instead? Orange is the best color!” “Heh, think she disagrees.” Raph replied. “Clearly she knows da best one’s red.” Mikey blew a raspberry at him before turning back to Ellie. “Then you can’t be in the super bus anymore. Shoo, shoo!” Ellie eagerly jumped down without a second thought. She ran to the biggest box around, slapping her hands over it. “Wed!” She said. “That’s… yellow, sweetheart.” April informed her. “Oooh…” Ellie replied, her eyes drifting back onto the box. “Well… We… Yee…” “Yel-low.” April repeated slower. Ellie watched her mouth for a bit as she repeated it a few more times. Then she returned towards the gift. “Wee-ell…oh.” She tried. The moment after, her hands were pulling on the gift as she gave up on naming it, ripping the paper out. “To-ee!” She giggled. “Ah, see? It wasn’t even red.” Mikey huffed. “Yellow is closer to orange. Close enough.” “Tsh, whatever.” Raph responded with an eye roll. “It ain’t orange either.”

Adam could almost see the cogs turn in her heads as she considered it. After a few seconds, she lifted her head, staring at the guests. “Apple, Casee, Heather!” She decided. “What? I can’t read stories!” Casey exclaimed. “Why?” Raph asked. “Ya know how ta read.” “Yeah but like, maybe I’m dysfunction, y’don’t know.” “…Do you mean ‘dyslexic’?” Don asked. “Ain’t that what I said?” “No, you said ‘dysfunction’ which is fundamentally not the same word.” “Whatever.” “Yer a dysfunction.” Raph huffed as he gave him a fist bump on the bicep. “S’what I said!” Casey exclaimed.

“Come on, Adaaaaam…” Mikey whined. “You owe it to me, you were the one to prank me with that rubber mask the other day. You gotta make it up to me!” Adam moved his jaw left and right like he’d seen Raph do when uncertain. It was true that he had scared Mikey with that mask thing, but… Mikey had kinda asked for it… But also, Mikey’d already cleaned the garage for it. But also, he’d still pranked him after cleaning the garage… Sigh… He was so weak to puppy dog eyes… “Alright!” Mikey cheered before he could even answer. “Come on! We gotta hurry up, he’s waiting for us!” He proudly showed his bag, revealing what looked like a costume made of mismatched items. He added a custom piece of it he’d apparently sown a logo onto before shoving the entire thing into his hands. “Go get changed!” He said. “Every superhero needs a super costume after all! I’d ask Raph to join us but he’s allergic to being a sidekick.” He huffed. “…Costume?” Adam asked.

Adam yawned, stretching as he made his way to his bedroom. His arm was suddenly yanked, a door closing behind him. Reflexes kicked in, and he shoved the aggressor away. A three fingered hand stopped him from growling, and he paused. Three fingers? “Shh…” Raph hushed him. He was quietly standing in his barely lit room. “Remember this?” He asked him. He was holding the original rubber mask Mikey loved so much, its hollow eyes looking even creepier in the dull of the room. “I got an idea fer it.” Raph told him. There was a glint in his eyes that shone in the semi-darkness. “Somethin’ that’ll make sure he ain’t ever wanna prank us with it ‘gain. You in?” Adam tilted his head unsurely. “What idea?” He asked. Raph smirked.

I got inspired into writing an Org/Apprentice themed One-Shot from Braig's PoV and ngl I absolutely love writing this gremlin.

Still trying to work out how far I want to take this thing - if I want to cut off in the apprentice era or timeskip into Days/II and III. #kingdomhearts #kh #ficupdate
Snippet from the Braig-One Shot (tentative Title: Growing Pains (is suffering well spent)) SPOILER FOR III ‘Buuusted,’ thinks Braig, though the word still sing-songs in the voice of the Master, who surely would have gotten a kick of seeing this all unfold. Xehanort had been careful to hide his tracks, but well… Even though his miraculous rise to Ansem The Wise’s right hand had been extraordinarily quick (and certainly helped along by Braig-Truly), Xehanort does seem to forget that the honorific “The Wise” had been well earned long before that. Ansem has plenty connections to the people they govern. Braig has been pointing out that this might grow to be a problem, but well… even though he is about ninety-nine percent certain that - memory or not - it’s Xehanort that’s calling the shots in this younger form, sometimes Braig does wonder… (Terra, though quite the goody-two-shoes, had been up for a surprise move or two in his short time on the playing field. Braig certainly hadn’t planned to give up on his depth perception at any point of his life.)

Adam just… won’t… let me go!” Mikey grouched with huffs of effort. “Come on, Leo, get him to let go of me already, this isn’t funny anymore.” Leo tilted his head. “And why is Adam holding you in the first place? That doesn’t sound like something he would do… unless you did something to him.” “No reason.” Mikey quickly answered. Leo’s eye ridge slowly raised. “Really?” “Yes!” Mikey replied. They stared at each other for a few seconds. Mikey looked away. “Okay, I may have pulled a prank on him one too many times…” He finally admitted. “How was I supposed to know that the thirty seventh time would be what would get him to steal my mask? He didn’t do it the other thirty six times!” “Huh uh. And then you’re surprised when Raph always defaults to slapping you at the first prank.” Leo said. “Hey, don’t give Adam any ideas.” He replied. “Adam isn’t Raph, that’s why I pranked him thirty seven times.”
