Ruby-crowned Kinglets (Corthylio calendula) are found across North America. They can be identified by the pair of side-by-side wingbars (one white, one black) and their behavior of flicking their wings as they hop around. #birds #nature #fieldmarks #photography

Empidonax flycatchers will not yell at you from two feet away letting you get a really good look and listen (and try to steal your fries) while you puzzle out fieldmarks just saying

Anyway learning other names for birds can actually help with identification, I love to translate the common names stored on Avibase too.
Alternative names often highlight other fieldmarks and behaviors, plus knowing them allows you to share more birds with more people. Rad af!

For Woodpecker Wednesday, here is a pair of Downy Woodpeckers (Picoides pubescens). The female on the left has no red on the head. The male on the right has the small red patch on the back of the head.

When I checked my #TenMinMerlin this morning, my first thought was "yay, it finally ID'd my local crows!"
then "WAIT an Orange-crowned Warbler???"
never before reported in my backyard park, so I had to find two hours finding it in real life
only my 4th in Ohio ever, first for my yard list!

And to be clear, I don’t have anything against learning fieldmarks! Like many other Merlin users, I’ll read the info about the bird and sometimes pull out my Sibley guide. But most the time I just want to know who is serenading me.

I adore sparrows and I love that after years of pursuing them they still confuse me sometimes
I saw this bird (left) today and called it a Savannah Sparrow, then second guessed myself (Vesper?)
Felt better when I realized how similar they look in a field guide!

Have you considered the possibility that for some ppl birding can be just fun and casual? Maybe they DON’T want to learn fieldmarks.

They do look a lot alike, don't they! One of the key fieldmarks to help distinguish between the two is that Mourning Doves have much longer primary extension.

I kinda wish there was a longer and harder test though. A 100% for someone that has to sit and consciously think about fieldmarks for each bear is very different from a 100% for me, person who spent longer reading the questions than IDing the bears because I simply know what they look like.
