This to me is one of Moorcock's minor 1960s SF novels, in a similar vein to The Fireclown (1965). Also known as The Twilight Man, it is a rewrite of a two-part serial published in New Worlds in 1964 when Moorcock (then editor) was short of longer material.

I was just perusing this article about New Worlds 158, January 1966 - sfmagazines.com?p=13278 - and discovered that Michael Moorcock was in the habit of reviewing his own books under the pseudonym of James Colvin! Sounds dodgy - but then here's what 'Colvin' had to say about The Fireclown... 1/2

Tour Newz (news) from Kerrang 109 (Dec '85) and we have three (3) bands in the listings named after stuff in Michael Moorcock's books. It's a shame Tygers of Pan Tang weren't doing anything that week, that would've been four.

I’ve read a lot of Moorcock over the years but somehow I’ve never heard of The Fireclown. The cover is terrifying, but this copy is in such fine condition that the orange staining on the edges is still perfectly fireclown orange! #BrideOfPulpHaul

You know... you are only the second person I have ever spoken with that references "Set the Controls". A great Waters era work. Did you ever read "The Fireclown"? I am trying to, without Google, remember if the song inspired the book or the other way around. Great book, read it in high school.

Aporos, "The Fireclown" (aka "The Winds of Limbo") 1965 novel by Michael Moorcock would be a great use now, considering the Party leader in the book is holding an age-old grudge against people trying to be liberated. This was 1965, mind.
