#flagellae
Volvox sp. of chlorophyte alga in a Sussex riverine SSSI; shown to me by Dave Bangs. Spherical colonies (coenobia) with an extracellular matrix of glycoproteins containing motile somatic cells with flagellae - that enables the colony to “swim” toward light. Reproduce sexually & asexually.

Flagellae? Anyway, feel better. Or not like microorganisms.

RFK Jr. is lying. He’s done so for so long that he may believe what’s coming out of his mouth, but he is a clear and present danger to the US, and especially our children.

When he says “there’s no vaccine that is safe and effective” every microbe stands on its flagellae (or whatever) and cheers.
This is a very dangerous lunatic.

RFK Jr: “The polio vaccine "killed many, many more people" than polio ever did.”

I've lost friends from college over this. They went full fundie after they married. "Intelligent Design shows that carbon dating is flawed!" "Oh. Does Intelligent design have a hypothesis or any evidence? Because a refutation of a theory isn't a theory." "But flagellae!" "Not a theory. Next!"

A beautiful Puss moth (Cerura vinula) caterpillar so called after the cat-like appearance of the adult moth, this species is fairly common throughout most of the UK. If disturbed, it raises its head to show its 'face' and waves the twin tails, which have red extendable flagellae.

gutpunch flagellae

Its fucked up that in like over a hundred years there have been few innovations in seacraft propulsion beyond the propeller. Like sure theres hydrofoils that decrease drag and increase efficiency and like hovercraft that use air nut wheres the subnautic drones with mechanical flagellae

Cutlery flagellae so they can be motile
May 31, 2026 at 12:07 AM
i was going that direction too! a set of wings or blades which are pulling forward and creating lift on the upstroke. you /could/ spin too, which might be good for stability. but i think propellers are a long shot. though look at flagellae...

E. Coli bacterium announces it is "proud" to be nominated to replace Makary, says it is "eager to continue Trump's regulatory agenda".

𝘊𝘦𝘳𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘢 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪 demonstrating its remarkable defensive behaviour near Mwinilunga, Zambia. When threatened, it raises its front and rear ends, exserts yellow flagellae from the latter, and flicks them above its body. More about the life and taxonomy of this cool moth: dx.doi.org/10.4314/met....

There's Felidae. I like Doloro (Latin for dolorous but could be mistaken for the name Dolores for humor). Flagellae for the tendrils would be cool too

Yes, but it all comes down to greed, stupidity and arrogance. Scary but boring.

Meanwhile, nerds have found out how the flagellae work, and are being very excited about it on 🦋. Not boring! In this one corner things still make sense, and I think many of us come here just to calibrate. Courage!

If we were multicellular creatures in a vast swamp of algae, I would shake my flagellae at you like this
a young boy wearing a hat and vest is standing in front of a group of people .

Fingers, toes, flagellae, and pili crossed. Some things I have done matter; none more than seeing former students succeed. 2/2

yeah gears!

and flagellae, i think, tick all the boxes even if wheels proper aren't practical here.

so some flagellae actually do have a free rotating base! i wonder if that could become a dynamo...

The parasite Perkinsus marinus causes a disease called "Dermo" in oysters and some other bivalves. Its introduction from the Pacific to the Atlantic in the 1940s killed 90-95% of the oysters in some Gulf and East Coast estuaries over the following decades, causing $100s of millions in damages (199)

We are the variables in the Fartbarker's experiment designed to measure the effectiveness of his bullshit. He knows HE is under the microscope also. I prefer my amoebas looking elsewhere. Fuck his flagellae.

Here goes: release of Episode 100 of #MattersMicrobial, recording of Episode 101, and then family business. Whew. I am as motile as possible as an entity without flagellae.

Because of the forces they have to withstand being whizzed around on #flagellae, flagellotropic #phages are super stable. It turns out that the same super-stability remains long after you adapt to a host bacterium without a #flagellum

Highly stable bacteriophages PIN1 and PIN2 have hallmarks of flagellotropic phages but infect immotile bacteria
npj Viruses - Bacteriophages (phages) are viruses that kill bacteria, with potential as antibacterial agents in industrial settings, agriculture, and human health. Here, we identified two phages,...

like the mind and concepts are amoeba and you're just going along and you accidentally wiggle your flagellae against the flagellae of the concept of truth and beauty for just a second but it escapes before you even fully clock the shape of what you just touched :/

Flagellae and transcriptase etc. were the real nanobots all along

Viruses are just self-replicating malicious code that sometimes runs on those bots

Of the 'typical excavate' characters, the feeding groove should be preserved but it would require several really well preserved specimens studied with SEM to demonstrate it. I'm not aware of flagellae being preserved.
