Researchers have developed a tracker with a metal ribbon that can easily be twisted in place on flatfishes to measure swimming speed, among other parameters. Truly, these are ties that time men's soles.

For Day 16 of #25DaysOfFishmas we have the only monospecific family of flatfishes. This is Oncopterus darwinii, the Remo flounder, a species found in coastal waters in a small area of the Brazilian and Argentine coasts.

Abstract The advent of molecular phylogenetics has rapidly transformed the understanding of relationships within Acanthopterygii, the spiny-rayed fishes. Acanthopterygii includes most of the marine fish diversity as well as several lineages in freshwater and contains such iconic groups as tunas, cichlids, seahorses, flatfishes, anglerfishes, and most fishes found on coral reefs. The robust and well-resolved phylogeny resulting from more than two decades of molecular studies includes some highly novel placements as well as unprecedented resolution of the lineages within Percomorpha. In this review, we highlight the patterns of morphology, ecology, biology, and biogeography within and among the major clades of Acanthopterygii using an evolutionary perspective that has been made possible by this emergent phylogenetic consensus. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive summary of each clade’s characteristics, serving as a reorientation for those familiar with previous conceptions of acanthopterygian phylogeny and as an introduction for those new to the biology, evolution, and biogeography of the major acanthopterygian groups.

The most obvious neat thing about flatfishes is that they're, well, flat. The over 800 species in this group are not all flat in the same way. Some are left-eyed, some right-eyed, and some can develop with either side facing up

Basically the Carangaria are a bizarre clade of fishes that feature some really charismatic guys. Barracudas, mahi mahis, swordfish and of course flatfishes. We learned recently that this group rapidly evolved following the mass extinction event that wiped out the dinos (2/n)
