Road Fleams

These fleams were made by John Savigny of London. Veterinarians also had fleams, so during this period it’s likely they were used for both humans and animals. Fleams were used in bloodletting; the blade cut into superficial veins to remove blood from the body.

I photographed one of those years ago for an exhibit at the museum I work for, this one is acc# 1996.152.5, ca. 1870. we also photo'd fleams, lancets, and bleeding dishes and cups.

my inbox currently has emails about bloodletting fleams and 14th century urine flasks, so I think I'm doing this whole medieval thing right

Can someone make a word called "fleams" that means annoying? I have a joke I want to do about Microsoft Teams.

If I'm going to lean into the time, I'll run a locally sourced, non gmo leech farm, with a side-gig crafting fleams.

I think leech farms are the next big thing, along with trepanning tools, and fleams.

While leeches are usually associated with bloodletting, our surgeon preferred to use a fleam, a sharp tool for puncturing blood vessels. Although the originals rusted away on the seabed, we found the leather case they were stored in!

Occasionally my brain forgets what century we're in and pipes up with thoughts like: "I hope they don't run out of bloodsticks and fleams"

for those imagining how much this would hurt, keep in mind that scarificators were the *less* painful innovation meant to replace the use of fleams, which depended on the skill of the bloodletter for depth and speed of the cuts.

I know a man with a collection of fleams! (Seriously, he plays a barber surgeon. He even keeps leeches.)

Over the decades I’ve probably sharpened linear miles of knives. Tell me what you want it to do (i.e. you want it to be for your left hand, or for mincing meat) and I’ll tailor the edge to your desire.

Swords are finicky, scalpels fussy. Fleams are quirky.

Don't fleam — sorry, we mean scream.

These 18th-century brass lancets in our collection, also known as fleams, were used for bloodletting.

There’s an Italian dessert that uses blood, but I’ve never got to try it. Yet… I have a collection of fleams and scarificators, so I’m ready tho.

Do something amazing … #giveblood and do it in the parish of @stgilescg.bsky.social and you do it under the ceiling of Barber- Surgeons’ Hall, appropriately decorated with blood letting fleams…
