Interesting new changes to FMQs in Scotland: instead of allocating parties a number of questions based on seats, they will now be given a fixed amount of time during which to ask questions and receive answers from the First Minister (e.g. 7 minutes for Labour)

Hmm, new time limited #FMQs coming in today. Countdown covers FM's answers as well as the questions, so a long-winded reply eats into the opposition's time?

The Scottish Parliament has made quite significant changes to FMQs since May 2026 and it will be interesting to see how they operate.

I wrote about them and how they compare with questioning in other parliaments in this @psa-parliaments.bsky.social piece recently: psaparliaments.org/2026/09/01/a...

Reform MSP Amanda Bland says that she's quit Reform and will sit as an independent. Offord loses the right to respond first at FMQs.

Reform has called on Bland to step down as an MSP, something they didn’t do when MSP Graham Simpson quit the Tories to join Reform. Odd, that.

Nah, but limit them to one term, and exclude them from being their party leader. If they don't have anyone elected on the constituency vote to be party leader, tough, they can just be a bunch of randomers unentitled to questions at FMQs.

Investigative journalists found that the Scottish Government was lobbied by industry to use the phrase ‘green data centre’.

The government must ensure the views of communities are listened to, not just lobbyists. #FMQs

The way Offal stood up to speak at FMQs today was soooo arrogant and with a look of pure boredom on his face. You have to wonder why he bothers being there at all.
Watch as MSPs applaud John Swinney after he tells Reform UK's leader in Scotland Malcolm Offord he is 'in no position' to lecture him on standing with communities

People experiencing a mental health crisis deserve care and support, not a police response by default.

At FMQs I challenged the First Minister on the use of police officers for mental health welfare checks.

First Minister's Questions
Here is a summary of the main talking points from this week’s party leaders’ FMQs: Scottish Labour's Michael Marra asks Swinney to act on homelessness, after a new report by Heriot-Watt University for Crisis Scotland said Scotland's extreme homelessness could be nearly halved in two years with the right interventions Swinney welcomed the report and said additional measures have been taken to construct more housing and support those at risk of homelessness Reform UK's Scotland leader Malcolm Offord asked Swinney to condemn the UK Green parties over their comments about the Israel-Gaza conflict and Zionism The first minister questioned Offord calling the Green Party "racist" just hours before his party is due to lead a debate on banning the burqa Gillian Mackay, Scottish Greens co-leader, called for a full public consultation on data centres, and Swinney said the government was engaging with parties and more guidance will come later this year The Tories urged Swinney to back their bill which aims to tighten up benefit fraud, which Swinney says Social Security Scotland already does well The Lib Dems led on violence in schools and called for support for teachers, and the first minister said violent protection framework and behaviour codes...
