World News in Brief: Cycle of violence continues in Haiti, seafarer deaths off Somalia, food insecurity in the Middle East
In an update to the Human Rights Council, the High Commissioner welcomed the first Gang Suppression Force operations, mandated by the UN Security Council. These will help boost security in Haiti “but the Force remains far below the strength needed”, Mr. Türk insisted, in support of its “full, accelerated deployment” with human rights safeguards embedded. Grim toll At least 5,700 people have been confirmed killed or injured by gangs – or during operations against them – since 1 January, according to the UN human rights office, OHCHR. Gang members have also kidnapped more than 230 people and raped at least 1,000 women and girls. The real figures are likely much higher, Mr. Türk said. In his update, the High Commissioner for Human Rights also warned that “extortion, looting and destruction of property” are crippling economic activity in Haiti. The “constant danger” prevents people from reaching schools, hospitals, and essential services, Mr. Türk stressed. Five seafarers killed as three hijacked ships are freed off Somalia Three hijacked ships have been freed after months in captivity, but five seafarers died during the rescue of one of them, the head of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has said. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez offered...

Study connects food insecurity to mental health in young mothers
A new review of research from across sub-Saharan Africa found that inadequate access to food is linked to depression, suicide attempts, HIV vulnerabilities, and poorer sexual and reproductive health outcomes among adolescent mothers. The findings, published in the journal PLOS ONE, suggest that food insecurity is not only a nutrition issue but also a critical health and equity challenge, highlighting the importance of placing adolescent girls becoming mothers at the center of policies and programs designed to improve food security, health, and social equity across sub-Saharan Africa. Food insecurity among adolescent mothers is not simply about hunger. Our review shows how poverty, disrupted education, stigma, and limited livelihood opportunities combine to create a cycle of disadvantage that affects both young mothers and their children." Suliat Fehintola Akinwande, lead author, PhD Candidate at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto, and lead author of the study The University of Toronto researchers conducted a scoping review examining the drivers, coping strategies, and health impacts of food insecurity among adolescent mothers aged 10 to 19 years in sub-Saharan Africa. Their review synthesized evidence from 16 studies conducted across seven countries and identified important gaps in research and policy. Poverty was the...

Slowly, with a plan and a purpose, we all should be stocking non-perishable foods. Just what you need. Don't horde more than you need.
I've lived through 2 gas shortages, long lines at the pump, stations running out.

VA Launches 18th Food Hub as Veterans 7.4% More Likely to Experience Food Insecurity
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has reopened a food hub as part of its pilot program it is running to combat food insecurity among the veteran population. The VA Memphis Healthcare System reopened its hub, Lt. Col. Luke Wathers Jr. VA Medical Center, last week through a partnership with Mid-South Food Bank, allowing veterans to access groceries and other supportive resources in Tennessee. It had initially opened in May as part of a soft opening before the recent full launch. “Because the Lt. Col. Luke Weathers Jr. VA Medical Center has the capacity to safely store and distribute food, Mid-South Food Bank is able to provide a variety of items for the food hub, including fresh produce, meat, poultry, frozen foods, and non-perishable items," Christina Drones, director of agency relations and program services for Mid-South Food Bank, said in a statement. Veterans are 7.4% more likely to experience food insecurity than non-veterans, according to VA's Office of Health Equity data. Experts attribute this gap to high rates of service-related disabilities, PTSD , and transitional civilian employment hurdles. Furthermore, social stigma and bureaucratic rules often prevent veterans from accessing traditional safety nets like SNAP. Twenty years ago, veteran hunger was...
