We need freelancers for this, spread the word
Some news: After its purchase along with Jezebel by Paste magazine, Splinter is back, and I am its new deputy editor. I'll write a bunch about climate and science and the policy and politics involved, among other things.

For today I wrote about the chart that broke my brain a little.
The Climate Charts Are Not Okay
Splinter is your home for news and opinions that challenge power in our political and economic system that's becoming more unhinged each and every day.

again I point out how strange it is that high-level diplomatic negotiations of war and peace are being conducted by freelancers Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, both of whom have egregious conflicts of interest, and not the actual secretary of state

Everything about this is a tragedy, every level, from cheated freelancers to authors obscured to readers who don’t get served either.
This was just posted by @tbretc.bsky.social on another platform. The Chicago Sun-Times obviously gets ChatGPT to write a ‘summer reads’ feature almost entirely made up of real authors but completely fake books. What are we coming to?

Back in the day, Twitter used to be really good if I set up a thread to connect freelancers with clients. Let's see if Bluesky can do it.

Clients: if you're looking for freelancers/contractors, get in the comments

Freelancers/contractors: get in comments

Everyone else: boosts appreciated

Great news for Freelancers working in the State of CA! The Freelance Worker Protection Act went into effect January 1, 2025. This law requires freelancers to be paid 30 days after completion of work for any job over $250, & gives them the ability to take legal action against clients who don’t pay.

Honor your agreements—pay your freelancers. If you’re in a tight spot financially, or other parties cause money problems so that you’re suddenly low on funds, that’s unfortunately completely irrelevant. The freelancers don’t need to care about that. Pay them.

Every publisher, including every comic book company, should provide security and safety training and support for freelancers.
Me: Hi employer I'm getting death threats and being sent photos of men standing outside my front door, can you help?

The Atlantic: Best we can offer is a think piece about what this says about online discourse that opens with a fictional dialogue between people debating things "the right way."

Quick morning shout out to all the other freelancers who didn't even know it was the bank holiday, the whole concept having become utterly irrelevant to their lived experience.
