was cleaning out my spam email account and found a time back in 2013 where i emailed cave story to myself so i could effectively download and play it anywhere

I know for sure they're on PC, and the older one might even have become freeware? I own them on Itch, and I can't say for sure about other store platforms or even consoles. I think they may be so old that it was before the time cross-platform indie releases were as common and expected as nowadays. 😶🌫️

what's the deal with freeware and FOSS stuff that later gets a Steam release for people who want the convenience or to support the developer? in practice Valve seems not to mind but their developer agreement has a clause about pricing on other storefronts IIRC (I haven't read it recently).

but the very first version of it i played was the freeware version that crashed and killed my save.
