i think framing it as a desire for inconvenience rather than a desire for intentionality in your actions is so disingenuous. it’s about HAVING limits and operating within them. not fucking “friction”

I hate hate hate the word frictionmaxxing (or anythingmaxxing), it’s so ugly, but the sentiment is right on the money. I gave a talk last fall in which I proposed that we write to introduce friction into thinking in an age of slippery thinking and we all need way more friction!!

I object to the term "frictionmaxxing" but I feel this column's thesis in my bones.
Inconvenience isn't always bad. It denotes something requires effort, and often, effort is what gives things — and life — value.

I object to the term "frictionmaxxing" but I feel this column's thesis in my bones.

My teenage daughter buys CDs and tacks the booklets on her wall. My son collects SNES cartridges. Neither of them is resisting surveillance capitalism. Neither of them is doing frictionmaxxing. But smart people keep insisting that’s what the kids driving the retro-tech revival must be doing. 🧵

And I do think there’s something to “frictionmaxxing” (sorry) to offset [gestures wildly to the online world]. also! I lie on the couch at night and look for thing not unlike vintage ceramics and it is absolutely all about the thrill of the hunt. So so much meat in those tabs!

People keep reading the retro-tech and physical media revival as a political project, either resistance to platform capitalism or a version of frictionmaxxing. I think what's mostly driving it is much simpler: we like how physical objects look and feel.
