i bet fstrim feels so good if you're an ssd
well I learned the hard way tonight not to run a linux kernel without long term support without a very good reason, but the comedic timing was incredible at least

fstrim Said 2 GiB Again, and Nothing Was Freed
The number fstrim prints is not reclaimed space: on ext4 it's one bit in memory, on XFS it's your own request echoed back. I measured it on loop and LUKS, then checked seven servers.

I think you're doing ~2TB disks? recent growth has hit disk usage, I think, might run out. compactions run better down, should enable that. we saw some fstrim issues, didn't include that in write-up but FYI.

@valvesoftware.com Are you guys ever going to work with Kingston to fix the firmware on the Steam Deck SSDs? Taking 20 minutes to fstrim is not acceptable especially with how often it triggers on the Deck.

For anyone noticing very poor performance on their Deck especially right after boot/wake from sleep check which SSD you have with this command
$ nvme list
KINGSTON OM3PDP3512B-A01 is the offending model.
$ pgrep -a fstrim
Will show you it running. Fstrim is chunked by the Steam client itself.
$ nvme list

031/128 The README specifies weekly fstrim and discards through the LUKS mapping. That's a documented storage policy, not a mystical optimization incantation. Storage choices have tradeoffs; a pretty desktop doesn't erase them.

Well, not good. My desktop has reset itself three times. Once it was an invalid fstrim for a massively high address. Then two kswapd failures.
I spent significant time getting pstore running to persist crash messages, only for glm-5.1 to tell me, oh, efi_pstore already caught all of these errs!

Ext4 va benissimo anche su ssd che supportano fstrim. Tuttavia btrfs nel tempo è decisamente migliorato e con gli adeguati parametri (noatime, compress=zstd, discard=async, space_cache=v2, commit=120 e quando serve nodatacow) va meglio su ssd. Per la manutenzione imposti un cronjob e via.

After a lot of research I'm relaxing my opinions on SSDs, the controller death thing is scary but I've been overblowing my fear of the NAND wear thinking it's just gonna die without warning but looking it up fstrim and S.M.A.R.T. helps keep track of that and HDDs aren't perfect either.

_probably_ all the major linux distros now put this in weekly cron; iirc fstrim detects which filesystems+devices it is relevant to and harmless otherwise. AND, we ran into a case where it desperately needed to be run _now_, AND on a busy server ... "it's complicated"

SSD trim on Linux runs weekly by default on most distros, but if you're running an older setup, check with `fstrim -v /`. Your SSD's garbage collection needs this to maintain speed over time. #linux
