#gScholar
To be clear, though: you only get to that pseudo catalog page if you start on GScholar (and the functionality isn't GScholar specific). If you start in the library catalog, you don't see the cited 'work' existing ever

Wow!

openalex.org looks like an amazing open alternative to Google Scholar.

Citation counts etc. look very similar to GScholar on a quick vanity search.

Check it out. Opens up a lot of possibilities for metascience.

due to the way gscholar works, you should assume that when you cite anyone it emails them your pdf. because it does.

Multiple locations online? E.g., gscholar, orcid, research gate

Please, please. Your professor is begging you to read the papers that you cite.

Because of how often students are citing and referencing papers that don't exist from authors who I know their entire body of work, I've started just plugging them all into gScholar and the results are disheartening.

The Google Scholar PDF Reader extension has always shown an outline, makes references clickable/linked to GScholar (screenshot 1). Now it provides an AI summary of each section (screenshot 2). https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/google-scholar-pdf-reader/dahenjhkoodjbpjheillcadbppiidmhp?hl=en

Daqui a pouco a gente vai ser acusado de citar trabalho que não existe pq o gscholar tá inventando também. Back to ir até a página do trabalho pra conferir a citação correta.

lol yea

also not widely known but a core difference between gscholar & semantic scholar (s2)

gscholar separates UI & data, so when you merge papers, change is only local to your page but not your coauthors

s2 updates the underlying data, and UI reflects ground truth for all users

I've been maxxing out gscholar requests with Zotero connector since 2018, their settings were on paranoid before llms
When we talk about the costs that LLMs impose on society we should not forget the fact that nothing works anymore because everyone is so scared of getting their shit scraped.

I can't even use google scholar from my university or starlink because they send too much traffic.

jk there is no need for my subpar contribution i just haven’t gone to gscholar yet where i’m sure there are 40 papers on this exact topic

I don't know what's happening with Google Scholar,* but lately I have been receiving a large number of absurd Google Scholar Alerts for papers anything from one to 15 years old. Is that widespread?

*My fear is they offloaded GScholar to AI agents, and it's on a steady way to becoming unusable.

This sort of thing makes me very glad that we have NASA’s ADS in astro academia. So much neater, more reliable and easier to use than GScholar. And also free. Every time I look at paid tools for citation tracking, I dispair.
Very glad to see more people vocally climbing on the "google scholar's backend is grabage, actually, & we should not predicate our academic evaluative frameworks on its shodily constructed, unable to be corrected, no technical support structure having busted nonsense of a website" train. Choo choooo
For a couple of years Google Scholar misattributed like a hundred thousand citations to Kuhn's /Structure of Scientific Revolutions/ to a book review. Google Scholar is great for literature discovery, unreliable for systematic lit review, spectacularly useless for bibliometrics.

some citation graphs data pipelines will create new "paper" nodes based on extracted bibstrings from PDFs

so in 2026 the papers we hallucinated in 2025 might end up being "real" papers on gscholar or sthn lol
January 6, 2026 at 1:07 AM
it's my understanding the gscholar is now so fully poisoned by hallucinations that nothing can be done, and G certainly has no interest in maintaining search quality anymore : (

gScholar counts tons of weird stuff as citation. Undergrad student uploads their report? Postdoc posts his conference talk slides? A journal publishes a list of their papers of a year? gScholar got it!
January 13, 2025 at 8:57 PM
For sure, but they also get a lot of legitimate papers in fields that inspire doesn’t attempt to count. If the real numbers are smaller for gScholar, the particle physics’ fraction of the numpy citations are even higher.
January 13, 2025 at 9:04 PM
I think this is because many citations are from people skimming through citation lists (e.g. gscholar) and trying to find one that sounds "right" to put in a "citation needed" slot. Joke titles are not transparent enough

I remember reading this so long ago. I think it was the Proceedings of the LMS. I should look it up in GScholar.

I did this manually when I went up for tenure—a great exercise (but lot of work 😅)! The new GScholar tool is way easier

Academics on the #jobMarket without a website can also make a #GoogleScholar profile to automatically
- find your publications
- alert followers about those pubs
- track/trace your citations
- list you with scholars in your area(s)

So easy! Watch me setup a gScholar profile in less than 3 minutes:

Shout out to that guy in the bar who, upon hearing that I’m a pathologist and have a searchbar shortcut for Google Scholar like the nerd that I am, proceeded to explain to my friend & me what GScholar was and what a peer-review is.

He was so excited about saying “evidence-based” in a sentence.

Pretty interesting AI outline in the new GScholar extension. They really tried to make it a navigation aid, rather generating what would appear to be replacement summaries
November 8, 2024 at 10:08 PM
Huge money in providing an API to directly get bibtex formatted citations and would fix this issue easily

Gscholar doesnt allow this
Semantic scholar rate limits

Who is building this?
