Before house numbers, Dutch city buildings had gable stones.

Overlooking Hoorn's main harbour, this 1616 gablestone depicts a long fluyt, which likely originated in the city. Sailing to the Baltic,'Inden Oste[r]varer' ships were unnarmed, favouring pacifist Mennonites.

Before house numbers, Amsterdam buildings had distinct gavelstenen (gable stones) often related to the owner's identity. This 1618 building on Nieuwebrugsteeg was hat merchant Jan Reinarts'. The gavelsteen depicts a scene 'In de Ionghe Hoede Kramer' (In the Young Hood Merchant).

The stone, originally from Techelstraat, is now on an orphan gevelsteen wall on Sint Luciënsteeg. Will revisit this wall on several occasions for gablestone stories in future.
