Personally I follow the Celtic Calendar, Spring (Earrach): February, March, April. Summer (Samhradh): May, June, July Autumn (Fómhar): August, Sept, October. Winter (Geimhreadh): November, December, January. Psychologically, thinking Spring starts on Feb 1st (Imbolc) helps me get through winter.

This lopsided relationship was the subject of my very modest final year undergraduate dissertation.

It did not reflect well on Flann, I think. He had a critical essay also, (A Bash in the Tunnel) from these later days, where he similarly wrestled with Joyce’s ghost.

The national networks, both north and south of the Border, had been in continuous decline for many years and the closure programme was not yet finished. The Loughrea branch and the services between Limerick and Claremorris although the line via Ennis has since reopened. The other service that is 'suspended' is from Waterford to Rosslare. One oddity is that although the line between Mullingar and Athlone, the old 'main line' to Galway is shown the station at Moate has lost its name. The line saw through services transferred via Portarlington in 1973 and eventually Moate was closed in 1987. The map also shows the joint 'Enterprise' services, from Dublin to Belfast, with Northern Ireland Railways and their lines from Belfast to Derry/Londonderry, Larne and Bangor. The outline of the island is in white, rail routes in green all on a red background for the sea.
