It isn’t necessary to mine #Thortveitite to produce Sc. Small amounts of Sc recovered from mine tailings – about 20 tonnes per year – go a long way toward manufacture of high-tech alloys. Tremendous range, from muscular, meter-long crystals, to fishing flies, to faceted gemstones.

Yes… if they put it under a microscope with a magnification strong enough to see the number. Or if they have the gemmology certificate in their hand.
With just a jeweller’s loupe, a hardiness tester and/or a light refraction test, they’re impossible to differentiate from “natural” ones.

No. It is as hard AF so to be used as the tool rather than the material. Though obvs you use the material to make a flint tool 🙄 I did gemmology in '79-81 so to me crystals and minerals are 'just' natural materials which can be made into beautiful things. Flint is right down the food chain. 😋

Now James Reich "Sanskrit Theories of Practical Expertise: The case of the jeweller". The idea at stake is that of expert perception. Does the jeweller *perceive* the essence of the stone or do they infer it? James also adds a lot of information from different authors in philosophy and gemmology
