Of course to be fair I also worked in a data center for 10 years so I kind of stopped noticing that noise. And all five data centers where I live don't make any noise outside of them unless they're generators are actively running which they don't unless there's an outage.

This is misleading in a way that the genAI pushers are keen maintain. Machine learning models trained on manuscript images can be very useful for historical research, e.g. they can match disconnected scribal hands. But the 'AI' in this story is using Bodleian material to train fake image generators.
The Bodleian houses hundreds of thousands of fragments of the Oxyrhynchus papyri from the Egypt Exploration Fund, that still need to be studied. They've been at it for a century but the end isn't in sight. If AI can play a role here, that would be a big plus.

As for detection, Commercial generators have imperceptible watermarks (e.g., synthid from Gemini). Those a relatively easy to remove (open source removers exist). Also, as the file circulates, the various compressions distort the watermark.
