Soap opera actors used to be reliable greats, but these days there are a few audiobook readers who have never had acting careers. Their faces aren’t even “made for radio”! I just think the genre has matured. (Authors still shouldn’t read their own books though. Consistently terrible.)

inaccuracy as media keep portraying that made science and reality non-existence and insult our intelligences.

My parent always kept putting at Soap-opera drama shows to watch that traumatised me as a kid which is why i developed a phobia of this genre.

I had a phobia of Soap-opera drama genre because of the scary intention, mean-spirited and aggression terrified me more than horror genre and triggered me in distress and flashbacks.

I like SNW as I had no real interest in any other Star Trek iterations beyond the original series.
Which itself did have some 'genre' episodes here & there.
I didn't mind the puppets as it was novel/funny but the noir & soap eps were poorly contrived, had little to achieve & failed even at that.

The Descendants exists in a genre I don't care for or seek out, contrived faux-slice-of-life. Not my cup of tea, but I appreciate the calm subtlety of the execution. In lesser hands, it would've been histrionic & soap operatic. I don't necessarily believe it, but I believe the scale of intensity.

In today’s @ft_weekend there’s a column by me about the writers of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, screwing up season 4 by attempting to dispense with the format across almost every episode. Perhaps you liked the season. You are entitled to that view. You are also wrong.

There was a black hole, a time slip narrative, the birth of an alien baby and much more besides. For diehard Trek fans, among whose number I count myself, it was bliss, not least because the rest of season four of Strange New Worlds, a prequel to the original Star Trek of the 1960s, had been a complete bloody mess. A second screenshot which reads: The majority of the 10 episodes were clumsy experiments with genre, breaking a robust format that has functioned perfectly well for the past six decades. One had a black-and-white film noir setting, with the Klingons as the Peter Lorre bad guys. In another, for reasons too convoluted to explain, the crew were in a soap opera and so behaving completely out of character. There was a fairy tale episode and a horror episode and a drugged-up episode (more character warping). Worst of all was the episode in which, through a transporter malfunction, all the characters were replaced by muppets apart from Spock. A third screenshot which reads: Star Trek’s age-old mission, to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilisations, had apparently been forgotten by a writing team who at best seemed bored with the show’s premise, and at worst held both it and the fans in contempt. Complaints piled up across social media and elsewhere. As one said, “for god’s sake, just do Star Trek.” Amen to that. All we wanted was the show we know and love. It’s all the fans ever want.

I don't really care about the NYT top 100 TV show list, but my one qualm would be that Beyond the Gates deserved a spot on it. It's co-produced by the NAACP and is the first hour-long Black-centered network soap. So important at this time in our country. It's revitalized the genre.

So much of what drives the audiences of these big prestige shows is that either people wanna know what happens next in their big genre soap opera (STRANGER THINGS, HotD) or they wanna see their beloved stories finally realized onscreen (GAME OF THRONES, PERCY JACKSON).

Potter ain't got either.
