Literature on summer-dormant geophytes is muddled. Some summer-dormant geophytes that flower in autumn are better classified as protoanthous, but this spring-flowering Haemanthus pubescens ssp. arenicola is hysteranthous. 📷: Karel du Toit CCBYNC4 #Amaryllidaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Hysteranthy (hysteranthous) describes plants that produce flowers after their leaves have fallen. From hysteros, meaning "later" or "behind" & -anthos, "flower." It typically describes geophytes that flower when leafless, as in Lycoris radiata. #hysteranthy #Amaryllidaceae #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Moved most of my geophytes and winter-growers to one spot for maximum sun. Half the year they rest underground during the dry summer heat, but when the nights cool they reemerge and take advantage of the rain

Know of any reliable lists of California geophytes online? If so, I'd like to hear about them. Based on an article from Rundel, I've tried building one (any errors my own): blog.revfad.com/2025/04/12/c...

Tao Fang et al. investigate the responses of #BelowgroundBudBank density of geophytes to environmental perturbations by #Meta-analysis. The results showed that belowground bud banks of geophytes are highly resistant and resilient.

A hike in the Kogelberg. This nature reserve along the Western Cape coast has a dense diversity of plant life with innumerable fynbos species, proteas, ericas, restios, and geophytes. One if the only places to see the delicate marsh rose. #fynbos #plants #southafrica #photographer

Always interesting to see how phenology changes by a few hundred kilometers. Sampling BEClimWood in Schorfheide and there weren‘t as many spring geophytes already flowering as in Hainich, but more animals around. Also saw some cranes, white-tailed eagles, whooper and Bewick's swans!

Happy [start of the rainy season in tropical East Africa] to all who celebrate! Including my Dorstenia geophytes who have never set foot on that great continent and yet have apparently synched their emergence from dormancy with the latest info from r/Tanzania

Cabinet update! They've been growing so much I had to swap out the middle partial shelf for a full one... look at these monsters. Most of my non-barnimiana geophytes/ tubers are awake and have handies coming (or are actively seeding like crazy). Nobody has died yet and, so far, we're pest free. YAY.
