This engraved Romano-Egyptian magical gem (green jasper) depicts the Egyptian god and psychopomp Anubis holding an ointment jar and standing over a lion-shaped bier. The mummified body of Osiris lies on top. 💀🏺 #ancientbluesky 1/

I’m slowly optimizing and uploading my photos from ‘The Kingdom of Pylos’ exhibition at the #GettyVilla, so until I get organized enough to write some posts about these fab artifacts, you can see them on my Flickr account. 🏺 #ancientbluesky flic.kr/s/aHBqjCjDa2

What’s fun is seeing how the ‘dancing woman’ form evolved well outside the Boeotian sphere. The wonderful dancer below, in ecstasy while playing a kithara, completely unveiled, could only have come from the colonies.

You will rarely see such a beautiful coin anywhere in the annals of history. No larger than a fingernail, this electrum stater from Lampsakos (Greek polis on the eastern shore of the Hellespont) depicts Pegasos, with curved antique-style wings. 🏺 1/

Very interesting to compare this to the fragments in the #GettyVilla. The Vettii fresco is, of course, more complex and in a far more detailed larger scheme.

The gem is attributed to the Greek engraver Solon, who worked in Roman imperial circles, fashioning idealized portraits of the emperor Augustus, his sister, and images of mythological figures. The artistically similar gem below at the #GettyVilla is also attributed to him. 2/ 🏺

As an active patron of the arts, Augustus promoted the emulation of earlier Greek art, now known as Augustan Classicism. Dioskourides participated in this zeitgeist, basing many of his gems on famous Greek statues, including this portrait of Demosthenes. 2/

The coin is ca. 405-400 BCE and both versions can be viewed at the #GettyVilla here in the L.A. area. Both are courtesy of the American Numismatic Society, and I've provided links to the detail pages for the coins on the ANS site on my Flickr descriptions. 4/

Color was extraordinarily important to ancient societies - as it is now. As the Polychromy Roundtable is about to debut at the #GettyVilla next week, here are two examples of how pigments were used to decorate everyday objects, both useful and decorative. 🏺 1/ #AncientBlueSky
