The GFC, much like the AI bubble, was nothing to do with reality, but ever-twisting levels of speculation. Too much of our financial system is powered by number games dressed up as investment.

this happened with the GFC and Obama too

Surreal to start creeping into Bush 08 levels without a true GFC equivalent, like things aren't great but they aren't 10% unemployment either
32 is so bad. i dont think people will be able to look at objective conditions, as unpleasant as they are, and understand how it could be so bad. thirty-two is "i never even liked you anyway" material.
Staggering levels of repudiation, rejection, and decay.

Yeah I have never been more sure something was up with the quality of the underlying assets of private credit. This is as close to a “my shirt that says we’re nothing like the banks during the great financial crisis” tweet as we’ve had yet

I'm relitigating the cause of the GFC on Twitter right now

i think mass social media and stagnant post GFC economics hitting at the same time basically caused this.
like there's something happening in almost every G7/WEIRD economy where the centre-right gets taken over by the far-right populist mind virus
i genuinely think the mass-radicalization of the centre-right anglosphere needs to be studied

A slack labor market also leads to bosses mistreating workers, lack of raises, lack of career advancement etc. This is why bosses hated the Biden labor market and love Trump restoring post GFC levels of worker precarcity.
I had a job all throughout the Great Financial Crisis, that doesn't mean that being constantly worried about losing my job didn't fuck me up big time.
1/ I'm seeing a bad take floating around: "even a bad recession boosts the unemployment rate only to 10%; for the other 90% the recession is an opportunity to buy cheap houses."

But recessions and their aftermath are bad for more than 50% of households.

This is so fucked. This is a dangerous loophole that's going to risk getting us pre-GFC Greece levels of tax noncompliance.
NEW: Senate unexpectedly passes the 'No Tax On Tips Act' in a unanimous vote

A new tax deduction up to $25,000 for cash tips, with limits, usable by employees to make up to $160,000.

Bill now goes to the House.

Do we think Pete ever did a gfc course lol
Do we think Pete (a former failed NG Army officer who can’t figure out not to share classified info on signal) is fully cogent on what TEA is and how and when it is delegated

various things that could/should've gone the other way: al gore 2000, 9/11 not happening, iraq, preventing the GFC, obama's response to the GFC, brexit vote, trump election 2016,...
I don't think it was the best time, but there was a "millenium approaching" pre-dotcom bust period when, briefly, the future seemed bright, the only time in my life when optimism seemed to be the zeitgeist
There is also ample survey data that people of any age identify the time period when things were best, e.g. the Good Ol Days, as whenever they were 10-15 years old.

They weren't the Good Ol Days, they're whenever you were a kid. That's what you miss: being a kid.

IF there is any bailout, which I don't think there will be, it'll be to bail out the bullshit lenders/private credit entities. The only GFC-level event could be if there's masses of secret private credit debt, but is that systemically threatening like the GFC was?
