Painted in 1914 and preserved in the Adachi Museum of Art, Daughter Miyuki (Miyuki) showcases Uemura Shōen’s masterly ability to infuse literary romance with profound psychological presence. The Nihonga painting depicts Princess Miyuki—the tragic heroine of the celebrated jōruri (gidayū puppet theater) and Kabuki play Asagao Nikki (The Tale of the Morning Glory)—seated upon the floor beside a thirteen-stringed zither (koto) and an open, illustrated narrative box (e-sōshi). Shōen captures Miyuki in a moment of startled, youthful alertness: her torso twists in a fluid S-curve while her head turns back over her shoulder, as if suspended by a sudden footstep or the distant sound of her beloved’s voice. Her pale, delicate features—rendered with razor-thin calligraphic contours (sen-gaki) and a faint flush of vermilion along the cheeks and lips—convey an arresting synthesis of aristocratic innocence and latent emotional drama. The sartorial rendering offers a feast of historic textile craftsmanship. Miyuki is draped in a luminous, coral-pink furisode entirely patterned with fine all-over tie-dye spots (kanoko shibori, evoking the dappled coat of a fawn). Sweeping across the lower skirt and train are bold, hand-painted bamboo grass leaves (sasa) executed in rich emerald and golden ochre, their crisp outlines providing a grounded visual anchor against the soft, porous texture of the tie-dyed field. Adding a dramatic chromatic counterpoint, her voluminous obi is tied in a high, youthful bow of cobalt blue adorned with vertical stripes and broad golden chrysanthemum (kiku) roundels. The subtle glimpse of red-and-white striped under-sleeves (kasane-eri) and the fine lacquered inlay of the neighboring koto underscore her elevated social rank and classical training in the traditional arts.

Hokusai is lauded for his landscapes, especially those from his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. However, he also designed many prints featuring women as the main subject. This print, showing a young girl reading a book, is an example of Hokusai's surprisingly close and careful observation of women's fashions. The girl's red and purple kimono with woven ikat pattern accords well with her green sash decorated with a bold flower pattern. The green and red combination is repeated on her inner robes. Her lower lip is green, a popular fashion in the early 19th century. Beni (safflower dye), applied in successive layers, changed from bright red to iridescent green. Hokusai cleverly took notice of this fashion and integrated it in the color scheme of his design. Meiji-period reproduction.

I'm forever kicking myself that I didn't save it, but I used to have a DVD of a 70's interview w/ a woman who chanted Gidayu (Japanese ballad drama). The interviewer was asking about her training, and, gesturing to her script-book said "now, ma'am, before the show, you said you can't read, yes?" 1/2

And what about the puppetry? 2 pupeteers for one puppet instead of three seemed to be off, the gidayu narration is strangely narration only, and not in the right tone, not even in Japanese.
