Mexico passed rules that weaken protections for critically endangered vaquitas, opening vast new areas in the upper Gulf of California to the deadly gillnet fishing that has almost wiped them out already. Scientists estimate 10 of these tiny, shy porpoises remain on Earth, down from ~600 in 1997. 💔
Demand Better Law Enforcement to Save Vaquitas
As few as 10 survive in Mexico's northern Gulf of California, and they continue to get caught in deadly gillnets set by fishermen.

All these gears catch way less than a gillnet fishing trip so sustainable markets that pay more have to be developed at same time which is difficult with US MMPA import ban on Upper Gulf seafood since 2018. "Catch 22" - since gillnet ban wasn't enforced no community investment in switching away.

Now fishers can *legally* use their gillnets outside of the Refuge, which should finally provide gear technicians with a gillnet-free zone where active net replacements like small seines & trawls (most challenging) can be tested & trialed without snagging on a maze of passive underwater gillnets.

Mexico shrank the vaquita's gillnet-restricted area by 86%, to 1,562 km². Only 7–10 of these porpoises were estimated alive last year. Officials hope focused enforcement will work; scientists disagree over whether the smaller zone helps or endangers their survival.

Mexico Cut the Vaquita's No-Net Zone by 86%. Fishers Deserve Better
The government says a much smaller gillnet-free area will help fishing communities and still protect the world's rarest porpoise. A line on a map has never stopped an illegal net, and the people it is meant to help have heard promises before.

Mexico Eviscerates Vaquita Protections
MEXICO CITY— Mexico has weakened protections for the critically endangered vaquita porpoise, opening vast new areas in the Upper Gulf of California to the deadly gillnet fishing that has caused the vaquita’s precipitous decline. Scientists estimate that only about 10 vaquitas remain, down from nearly 600 animals in 1997. Mexico’s new rules, issued yesterday, eviscerate protections adopted in September 2020, which were not fully implemented and would have significantly improved the vaquita’s chance of recovery. “With only a handful of vaquita left, it’s absolutely shocking that the government is gutting protections rather than stepping up to help these little porpoises,” said Alex Olivera, Mexico representative at the Center for Biological Diversity. “Instead of ramping up enforcement, Mexico is normalizing illegal fishing that the government has been unable or unwilling to stop. These new rules open most of the vaquita’s remaining habitat to the gear that kills them. Vaquitas don’t follow maps, and scientists have repeatedly seen the porpoises outside the only area where the gillnet ban is currently enforced. It’s heartbreaking because if this isn’t reversed it will almost certainly lead to the vaquita’s tragic extinction, which could’ve been prevented.” Vaquitas face one primary threat: They become entangled and drown...
