They should make an NES emulator that simulates the look of something like GLQuake on an original Voodoo card if they haven't already

The 3dfx Voodoo wasn’t the first 3D card, or the most complete. It was the first that made games feel smooth. Four years later, Nvidia bought what was left of the company. What went wrong? #Voodoo #Gaming playstationcouch.com/post.php?id=...
The 3dfx Voodoo Worked So Well Nobody Saw the Problem
Early 1997. Someone installs GLQuake,...

People that can look at the hardware renderer, look at Vulkan, look at the network stack, and make them do things nobody thought was possible. GLQuake and Quakeworld changed what was possible in gaming. We need engineers as much or more than designers.

You know I just realized with a fancy glquake shader I saw back in like 2003 you could very easily make synth data for all kinds of blueprint like drawings and... okay yeah I see it. This is the kind of application a ux designer would find very quickly

dont even wanna do much, opengl 1.1, which is already supported by glquake. but the fun for me is in doing it myself.

Many happy memories playing Quake, GLQuake and QuakeWorld!! I liked it so much i built a Dual 3Dfx Voodoo2 machine to play it all again!

surely someone has made a GLQuake port for Dreamcast, I thought. one that I don't have to compile.

I'm in luck; someone uploade nuQuake 1.2 (with the shareware data) to a random MediaFire. Hooray! Except good Lord, what did they do to the sound engine?! 🙉

I was gonna say I'm not sure a purely naive port of GLQuake to the Dreamcast would work because I don't know if the PowerVR chip in it is fully GL compliant.

But this is a weird one. Sounds like Quake from 60 feet away. :P

update: have successfully acquired and burned RadQuake 5.0 for Sega Dreamcast. While not the most ideal Quake port for the machine (it renders in software), it does finally get the thing into the Spreadsheet.

I feel as though a GLQuake port might achieve better performance.

ignoring how bad this looks... they literally thought the leftover fog code in glquake was artistically meant to be gray?
September 4, 2026 at 12:17 PM
i'm still annoyed by "(gamename) (higherversionnumber) patch". that glquake one from 2000 with the shitty 'bumpmap' and the forced fog still fools some today
September 4, 2026 at 5:56 AM
yeah i actually made an evil glquake fork just for this lmao, i was way too curious to see how our game would look like in glide, the actual game will still be software rendered

Going from Atari 2600 to today, for me no jump in graphics has ever come close to how mind-blowing it was going from playing quake, to installing a voodoo card and playing glquake.

glquake-Binary von Heft-CD rüberkopiert und seinen Augen nicht trauen können.

Installed a Voodoo 3 2000 into my AT system. Also added a fan to help with temps. Overclocks up to 172MHz without any issues! Any higher causes artifacts and random system freezes.

GLQuake timedemo scores 73 FPS with the K6-2 at 400MHz (66MHz FSB), and 90 FPS at 500MHz (83MHz FSB).

Finally works

GLQuake 640x480

The only one to reach around 25fps in GLQuake in 640x480 without massive stutter
September 26, 2025 at 7:27 AM
I just dropped it in as-is and hope people don't think I mean GLquake
November 19, 2025 at 7:03 AM
granted, this is explicitly for GLQuake purposes
August 9, 2025 at 2:16 AM
could I talk about the N64 port of quake on a very specific podcast right now at the drop of a hat with zero prep work? yes.

but what if I played through the Saturn conversion, the N64 port, and GLQuake on my Pentium II/Voodoo 2 box concurrently
July 17, 2025 at 5:16 AM
I need to install GLQuake, Q2, and Unreal next. Software Quake runs totally fine, Quake III is realistically too much for a single Voodoo 2 to handle very gracefully, and Hexen is of course running in software as well.

Tonight we're testing a stack of Slot 1 Pentium III CPUs and benchmarking a pile of 90s PCI cards.

GLQuake, Quake, Final Reality and 3DMark99.

Basically a late-90s retro PC lab night.
