The trumpetfish is a master of camouflage, hiding expertly within the branches of soft coral gorgonians waiting to ambush their prey with a quick slurp. This is the first trumpetfish we’ve seen since 2023. #trumpetfish #camouflage #oddball #coralcitycamera #miami #portmiami #biscaynebay #coralcity

Our #ROV surveys in Lesvos continue, revealing breathtaking #gorgonian forests—but not without a stark reminder of human impact. #Ghostnets and abandoned longlines haunt these vibrant ecosystems.

Good morning from west coast Australia!

My new year's resolution from 2021 was to learn to free dive...
And today I am taking the first step towards that on a PADI free dive course!

Anyone here like to spend time in the water? 🪸🥽🐠

A sad video from Florida.

After decades of decline, remnant corals killed by anthropogenic heating in 2023 are being replaced by algal turfs, gorgonians (sea fans), Palythoa (a zooanthid, the yellowish rubbery mounds), & a few sponges.

It’s no longer a coral reef.

In 2022, the Ranger explored the Alboran Sea, a meeting point between the Atlantic & Mediterranean.

We documented exceptional seagrass meadows, corals, gorgonians, & the wildlife that depends on them… along with plastic pollution & signs of bottom trawling in protected areas.

Pink sea fan skeleton found in Cornwall this week, plus one from a while back. Originally thought to be plants, they're actually animals: a type of ‘horny coral’ known also – rather magnificently – as ‘warty gorgonians’ (see second pic for the warts).

Clip from the Tokmakia plateau (NE Lesvos): a mesophotic coralligenous reef with dense red gorgonians and complex bioconstructions. This is the kind of “animal forest” habitat our work focuses on documenting and conserving.

www.npr.org/2025/12/21/n... new species could include crabs, sponges, ascidians or sea squirts, as well as new gorgonians, a type of coral.
Scientists say they have discovered 20 new species deep in the Pacific Ocean
Researchers retrieved reef monitoring devices that had been placed in deep coral reefs in Guam. The devices were placed up to 330 feet below the surface.

The summer of 2023 wiped out many less thermally-tolerant strains of coral and gorgonians locally, so it makes sense that we are seeing less mortality overall this year.

Same area, but now with the pressure visible: longlines, ropes and other fishing gear litter entangling gorgonians and covering the seabed. Chronic ghost fishing and structural damage that we urgently need to address.

Flamingo tongue, a sea snail that eats gorgonians, converting their toxins into chemical defenses (though hogfish, pufferfish, & Spiny lobster eat them). The spots are in the mantle, but people collect them thinking the shell is colorful, and populations have suffered. 🦑 #scuba #diving #oceans
