Remember the Costa Concordia? Its 2012 shipwreck devastated coralligenous reefs

👉 Our new study shows how active restoration helped revive the biodiversity & aesthetic value of these fragile ecosystems

Coralligenous ecosystems are unique underwater habitats found only in the Mediterranean Sea. They form in dimly lit waters, usually 30–150 m deep and support more than 1,800 species. They have been decimated by destructive bottom trawling fishing, which can flatten centuries-old

Clip from the Tokmakia plateau (NE Lesvos): a mesophotic coralligenous reef with dense red gorgonians and complex bioconstructions. This is the kind of “animal forest” habitat our work focuses on documenting and conserving.

Again, science shows that protection works!

Oceana campaigned for years to #BanBottomTrawling in the Menorca Channel. Scientific research by @ieo.es and @csic.es has now shown that coralligenous habitats and algal forests have thrived and expanded inside protected areas since the ban.

This is the moment we realised what we were looking at.

During @nemo-tools.bsky.social ROV surveys to map gorgonian & coralligenous habitats, the seafloor suddenly turned into a landscape of circular nests, each guarded by a male.

We weren’t searching for spawning grounds – we dropped onto one.

🌊 Nestled between Menorca & Mallorca, the Menorca Channel hosts coralligenous beds, rhodolith beds, kelp forests & rich wildlife.

This biodiversity was under threat, so Oceana launched a campaign to protect it. A recent @ieo.es study shows it worked!
