the rest of the world recovers, and so does varha.

#ffxivwrite #gothmiqotewriting #wolstinien #varha.txt
screenshot of text that reads: It has been just over a week since they returned on the Ragnarok, and her body aches. It still hurts to move, hurts to breathe, hurts to be *alive*—but she lives. They all do. Varha is still bleary when she wakes up, forgetting for a moment that they’re in the Baldesion Annex, forgetting that she’s not still *up there*, adrift, waiting for an agonizingly slow death to claim her— *Stop*. Estinien sleeps though her interruption this time. She imagines it’s much more difficult when she’s throwing herself out of bed, tangled in the sweat-soaked sheets as she spills onto the floor, sobbing until she can return to the present. This time, she remains on her back, barely moving save for the way her eyes dart about the room. Estinien is solid and warm at her side, pressed against her body with an arm wrapped protectively around her middle. He hasn’t been much farther from her than that lately, if it can be helped. She welcomes the contact, rolling so she can press into his chest. The arm tightens unconsciously, and she feels some of the tension in her muscles release. A warm night breeze drifts into the room through an open window, carrying with it starlight that washes over the blanket. The trees sway gently, soft shapes against the night sky, and she watches until she feels her eyes slip closed again. Sleep takes her once more, and Varha is certain that she’s alive.

"Fish alright for supper?" Varha asks him that as if she isn't already standing knee-deep in one of the Steppe's rivers. She's beaming at him, wide enough that he can spot her sharp canines from his place on the bank. Not for the first time that day, Estinien forces himself to avert his gaze from her mouth—he could lose himself in the speculative visions of what those teeth might feel like on his own flesh later. "More than alright," he agrees, glancing between Varha and the water. "But…?" She prompts, sensing hesitation. "Would it not be easier with a fishing rod?" He asks, a smile weaving its way through the question. Varha tilts her head back and laughs, flashing her canines at him again in a way that feels nearly teasing before she speaks again. "Easier? Perhaps. But hand fishing is just as efficient, and the water is pleasantly cool besides. Join me, if you like—we'll catch twice as much, twice as fast." She's looking at him hopefully, smiling still, but softer now. Estinien hasn't hand fished before, but that doesn't stop him from bending down to unlace his boots and roll his pants up. "You'll have to teach me the proper technique," he half-jokingly warns. "I'm afraid you may find my experience somewhat lacking." Varha brightens visibly as he joins her, eyes glinting like garnets in the evening sun. "I'm not worried; I'm sure you'll make for a quick study," she says warmly. "Right! So the first thing you want to do is…" She loses herself in the explanation, and not for the first time, Estinien is glad that he decided to take the long route back to Kugane at her side.

Thancred does *not* yelp when Varha materializes seemingly out of the void beside him, because he’s a professional with more self-control than that. She notices anyway because she’s his friend. She points it out because she’s also kind of an ass. “Did I scare you?” She grins, exposing sharp canines even more than usual. The expression is only made the *slightest* bit more unsettling with the addition of the reflective flash of red eyes against the night. “You’d enjoy that, wouldn’t you? Unfortunate that you didn’t manage it,” he lies smoothly. “Lies,” she laughs. “You’re losing your touch, Waters. I’m only nocturnal on my mother’s side; you should have heard me well before you saw me.” “I don't think that has anything to do with whether or not I heard you,” he scoffs Varha rolls her eyes, waving a hand dismissively. “Semantics. At any rate, your watch relief is here—go get some rest, and maybe I won’t catch you so off guard next time, yeah?”

Varha & Estinien’s Outdoor Sex Habit™️ continues well into Dawntrail & beyond

#gothmiqotewriting
Text that reads: While Varha had been spending the last several weeks traveling with Wuk Lamat, Estinien had evidently been scouting out secluded locations in the Turali landscape, fully intending to spirit her away to them as soon as her responsibilities were fulfilled. Lake Toari is her favourite so far, even if she’s probably going to be finding sand in her pack for the next handful of days. The consequences of making camp near a lake are the furthest thing from her mind, though, when she feels Estinien’s weight above her, kissing her breathless with an intensity that rivals the heat of battle, filled to the brim with tongue and teeth and *want*. His thigh presses insistently against the ache between her legs, forcing a hungry noise from her throat without breaking the kiss. Sand be damned, indeed.

screenshot of text reading: The combination of Tuliyollal’s midday sun and the sound of gentle waves just outside the For’ard Cabins is doing a fine job of luring Varha into an ill-advised nap; the sensation of Estinien’s fingers moving gently through her hair as she rests her head against his collarbone isn’t helping either. It’s through this false sense of security that she almost misses the stutter in his rhythm, and the specific sort of exhale he makes when he thinks something’s funny—but doesn’t want to draw attention to the fact. “Don’t even think about it,” she mutters without opening her eyes, knowing full well that he was about to start ghosting his fingers along the tips of her ears until they twitched. An endless source of amusement for him, and a habit that fills her with petty, harmless irritation. “Move your hand away from my gods-damned ear, Estinien—I can feel you up to something back there.” She feels the chuckle roll through his chest more than she hears it as he moves his hand away from the tip of her ear and back to its previous place in her hair. “I haven’t the faintest idea what you mean,” he says sweetly, pressing a kiss to the top of her head in an attempt to placate Varha’s grumbling. She knows damn well that probably won’t be the last time he tries it today, but for now, she’s content to ignore that fact and let herself drift once more.

Perhaps it’s not just the increased workload that’s contributing to the exhaustion. Varha laughs, only stopping to raise an eyebrow once she realizes he’s being serious. “Surely they know how to handle a restless patient in the infirmary?” “Ordinarily, yes,” he says flatly. “But most Temple Knights generally aren’t the sort to use a fifth-floor window as an exit, especially when they haven’t healed fully from their injuries yet.”

Hades should have known that he'd been had the moment he heard the door to Hythlodaeus' office lock behind him. He'd been reluctant to join his lovers for lunch, and perhaps rightfully so; they clearly had no intention of having any sort of meal that afternoon. He's cornered, backed up against the edge of a desk and flanked by two warm bodies with wandering hands. Hythlodaeus occupies his own mouth, tongue insistent against Hades'. He can't focus too much on that without Arsinoë threatening to steal it away. Her clever fingers manage to loosen up the collar of his robe just enough to grant her access to his collarbone, which is currently being decorated with open-mouthed kisses that will eventually turn into bites. "Tread lightly," he admonishes with a hiss. It loses some of its acidity with how breathless it sounds after he manages to tear himself away from Hythlodaeus. The day is only half over, dammit, and he's still going to be expected to make an appearance at his office after this, and he knows what he looks like after these two get to have their way with him, and— Arsinoë laughs against his flesh, breath rolling over the moist skin, and Hythlodaeus adds a bright "Not to worry—we'll be sure to handle you with care, dearest Hades," in a tone that suggests he absolutely should be worried about such a thing. His lovers exchange a look, and he suspects that he may very well end up having to call out for the rest of the day (almost as if that was the intent from the start).

a wip/approximation of #SixSentenceSaturday (six-ish sentences anyway), in which Varha takes the regicide charge really seriously & Estinien gives about as many fucks as she does.

A screenshot of text that reads: “Unfortunate that we never seem to cross paths under more favourable circumstances,” Estinien observes as he approaches from behind. “You’re remarkably calm for someone speaking to the Sultana’s supposed killer,” she says with a wry smirk that fails to reach her eyes. “I may not know you well, but poison doesn’t seem to suit your tastes,” he says, tilting his head towards the gun concealed at her hip. “Nor does such sloppy work—*I* have standards,” she agrees dryly, leaning heavily on one of Ishgard’s many stone railings, staring blankly out at the lower parts of the city. “Believe me, if I had any inclination towards such a thing, I wouldn’t have been caught, and we wouldn’t be having this conversation right now.” “Were I someone else, your ‘standards’ for regicide might be mistaken for a confession.” “Well, lucky for me then that you’re the charitable sort of man who takes these things in good-faith,” Varha says, rolling her eyes.

Hades tries not to let it wear on him, but he’s acutely aware of the preternatural sluggishness the passage of time seems to have adopted since Arsinoë let them know she was returning from yet another voyage. Hythlodaeus knows that he’s anxious for her return, owing both to the fact that he shares the same sentiment and that he can read Hades’ heart with ease. He’s gracious enough not to give into the temptation to tease him over it, though Hades can sense it just below the surface. He’s not surprised, then, when Arsinoë strides into his offices in the middle of the day, a whirlwind of warmth and mirth. She’s never had any issues with abusing her title of Azem to do so, and he doesn’t think she’s going to start showing restraint any time soon. He grumbles about deadlines and decorum when she places her mask on the desk with a soft noise, draping herself over him in a blanket of pure joy as she presses a never-ending collection of kisses into his hair and on his face, laughing in the gaps. “You could simply tell me that you’ve missed me, you know,” she says, and he can hear the smile curling around each syllable without having to look. Hades mutters something that sounds like assent, and doesn’t bother holding off her assault, which is about as close as he’ll get to admitting he agrees with the observation.

Estinien makes a move (sort of) & Hades unhappily attends a work function.

"By the way—is this yours?" Varha blinks at the small silvered ring in Estinien's outstretched palm. It takes her a moment, but she realizes that he's holding one of her earrings—one that she hasn't seen since they last parted ways in Ishgard. "Where'd you get that?" She asks as he drops the delicate hoop into her palm, metal glinting dully against the light of the campfire. "By my bedside while recovering. It must have gotten lost during one of your visits," he reasons with a hint of a smile. "And you hung onto it all this time?" She laughs gently, closing her fingers around it. She's long since replaced it; she's got enough piercings that she doesn't think much of losing them, and she's never been one to splurge on earrings for that very reason. All the same, there's something touching about the gesture, about the idea of him hanging onto something so small just on the off chance that they might cross paths again. "That's sort of sweet, you know. Thank you." And she means it. "Well," he says as he takes a drink out of the wine skin they've been sharing for the last hour, "it's not as if it was terribly difficult to travel with. Still—you're welcome." Whether the light flush he sports is from the drink or their exchange, she can't be sure. "You could just pretend that you're enjoying yourself, you know." Arsinoë's voice is light in his ear as she practically glides up behind him, filled with an unmistakable mirth that lets Hades know she's enjoying this far too much. But then, he wouldn't expect anything less from her. "I am doing precisely that, thank you," he says caustically. The urge to grit his teeth around the words is ignored viciously. "Oh, is that what you're doing? I couldn't tell," she snorts. "Can you truly fault me for having little interest in these gatherings outside of our regular working hours?" He bites back. Really, could she blame him? It was bad enough that the Convocation had been unable to come to a resolution earlier in the day; to ask him to attend what was (in his mind) an entirely pointless dinner afterwards only added insult to injury. "Well, would you look at that," she says, sidestepping his comment entirely as she loops an arm through his, pressing her body close and steering him towards a table of refreshments (only partially against his will). "Your glass is empty—no wonder you're not having a remotely decent time. Come, let's go rectify that, and then we'll see how the night goes, hm?"

Alphinaud is literally the sole person in the Heavensward party who is determined to have a remotely decent day I think

#ffxivwrite #gothmiqotewriting
Screenshot of text that reads: “He’s a good kid. Strange, of course, but still,” Varha hums, taking a careful sip from her mug. Tonight’s dinner was a lacklustre excuse for stew—the broth was too thin for her liking, and the small game they’d caught in the Churning Mists would never be a favourite of hers, but it would have to do. “I’m surprised the situation hasn’t completely killed his optimism,” Estinien replies, equally unimpressed with the fare. They watch as Alphinaud prods at the campfire, evidently satisfied with his work. Text continuing from the previous image: “Every group needs to have at least one person who isn’t completely bent on seeing the worst side of everything,” she chuckles. “As long as someone still cares about honour and fairness, the rest of us can focus on slitting throats. In a manner of speaking, of course,” she adds with a sideways glance. “A bit grim for dinner conversation,” Estinien says, making a noise that resembled the first notes of gruff laughter. “You disagree?” He pauses, thoughtful for a moment of brief silence. “Not at all,” he finally replies. “Not at all.”

Throws a bit of Varha’s pre-ARR family canon at you, as a treat

#gothmiqotewriting
Text that reads: She can still see the smoke curling up above the tree line even days later, mingling with the clouds above and painting the sky with a thick haze. “There’s nothing left there, you know,” Rhaya'ra grouses as he emerges from their pitiful excuse for shelter. It was the best that could be done given their circumstances. Varha bites into the flesh of her lip, agitating a wound she refuses to let heal. It feels like she’s being scolded for breaking a plate instead of being reminded that everything she’d ever known was scorched out of existence. She hates him in this moment. She hates herself for hating him. “I know,” she says hoarsely, refusing to tear her eyes away from the carnage. “I know.”

Right before the start of SHB, Varha & Estinien have a chance to pursue whatever was being inched towards in Heavensward but got shelved for plot reasons. Things escalated quickly between them, needless to say.

#gothmiqotewriting #varha.txt have a first kiss wip btw

bsky.app/profile/goth...
Screenshot of text that reads: "I think," she says, removing the rim of the wineskin from her lips thoughtfully, "that you've been looking at me like you've been wanting to kiss me since we made camp." Estinien doesn't say anything—doesn't even breathe, really. They're *not* drunk; there's no way in all of the hells that the equivalent of two glasses between them would be enough to do it by any stretch, but he's not really sure how much of a difference it makes anymore. The firelight casts a flickering outline against her profile, and she eyes him without turning her head, waiting for whatever response he can offer. "Maybe it's the other way around," Varha laughs softly with a shake of her head. He realizes that he's taking too long to reply, but how can he be blamed for that? It was one thing to think about her as an abstract concept, something far-off and intangible enough to be safe. The flesh and blood version was far less predictable than the brief scripted fantasies he would occasionally allow himself to indulge in. Screenshot that reads: She's wearing a smile he can't quite place, meeting his eyes with a patient intensity through dark lashes. "I think you should do it either way, though," she shrugs. "If you want to. If you'd like." Something flashes in her gaze when she blinks, still holding his own. “Or perhaps something more than just that,” comes out in a damn-near whisper, forcing his attention into a narrow focus on just her. As if it could be anywhere else. Screenshot that reads: It has been years since Estinien has kissed anyone, but his body seems to know how to close the gap easily enough. It's an ungraceful move, shifting halfway across the tent while being careful not to knock the support pole down with his limbs. He's half-leaning over her, one hand on her jaw, surprised at his own sudden hunger. (If he stopped to think about it, he wouldn't have been at all; no one would question a starving man's need for sustenance.) She takes a sharp inhale on contact, perhaps not expecting immediate action, but finds her pace easily. Before the positioning can get uncomfortable, he feels her hands sliding towards his shoulders and chest, pushing back slowly, gently, until they've shifted so she's practically sitting astride his hips. The small part of his brain that's still desperately clinging to rational thought is deeply disappointed; he should be moving slower than this. He should be savouring the moment, trying to make it more sensual--more *special*, because he doesn't know if this is just a one-time-thing or not (and if it is, he wants to remember as much as possible). Then she sinks her teeth gently into his bottom lip, insistent on *more*. Whatever part of him that was concerned with slowing down mere moments ago completely disintegrates with the action.
