i know in my mind that the command "gpupdate" means "group policy update" but in my heart it means "gay pup date"

Wow! I actually needed /force to gpupdate for it to work today! Moved a computer to a different OU without rebooting, ran elevated gpupdate but only 3 out of 9 GPOs applied. Modelling showed all 9 applying. Repeated with /force and all GPOs now applied

It's worse when I see folks do this as their troubleshooting methodology. Did you reboot? (Reasonable) Did you run gpupdate? Did you release and renew the IP? Did you clear cookies? Regardless of what the issue is.
