A grammar-fanatic would gripe
To his wife about language, and snipe:
“Your syntax is bad!”
She’d respond, really mad:
“I’ll divorce you if down you don’t pipe.”

It’s National Grammar Day. Wow!
Is syntax important? And how!
Though the rules may confuse,
You should never abuse
Our great language. So rules them learn now!!!

John keeps up his nine-year tradition of posting a Grammar Noir story on National #GrammarDay.

This time, it's journalism that has died.

Divisions abound.
Will subject-verb agreement
Also elude us?

Two weeks to #GrammarDay, the best day of the year (except for Blue Bic Pen Day). That means it’s time for grammar poetry!

Acts like I’ve abandoned him

I don't mean to seem confrontational
About use of the marks punctuational,
But commas, you snarks,
Go inside the quote marks
When you're dealing with copy quotational.

When you #punctuate, please don’t be rash.
Over-use can turn prose into ash.
And a #comma misplaced
Lays your writing to waste.
Mark my words … or your readers shall dash.

@acesediting.bsky.social, challenge accepted: a haiku for National Grammar Day, dedicated to my favorite copy editing pet peeve.

"Use the comma splice
at your peril, however
periods are good."

Long flight today offered plenty of time to think about #GrammarDay poetry for the #ACES contest. Here’s a confession haiku:

“Lain” stresses me out.
I’m way past tense at this point.
NGL about that.

There once was a guy from Syosset
Wanted to copyedit but lost it
Fully pedantic he was
They called him the Rule Fuzz
Stet, mutha****er, stet.

(Yes, the rhyme scheme is subpar. That's because I'm a copyeditor, not a poet.)
The ACES National Grammar Day poetry contest is now accepting entries!

You have until the end of the day on Feb. 28 to submit your limerick, haiku, or other poem about LANGUAGE. 🧵

Wow, I'm blown away to learn that English isn't the first language of the poet who won the National #GrammarDay poetry contest!

As one of the judges, I can tell you the competition was fierce. If you want to roll around in some fabulous language, check out the winning poem and runners-up.

The OED has "bevy" as a drink of beer from 1889.

The origin of "bevy" as a group or collection is unknown, but some people think it could also come from drinking — the meaning evolving from a drinking party to just a party or collection.

So the grammartini recipe in our #GrammarDay bevy is apt!
