Winter edge burning along the driveway is always a good reminder that grasstrees are a potent firebomb in the making.

Had a mate from mainland Australia come for a visit and spied my copper patina artworks and picked one out for herself.

Grasstrees are really weird plants, and really REALLY hard to draw.

In less than one minute you can see why they call our native grasstrees (Xanthorrhoea preissii) nature’s flamethrowers! They can exceed 1000 celsius. This was during a “cool” fuel reduction burn on my property. It is not advised to burn them more frequently than every 5-6 years.

Had another play around with my copper patina art yacca design, used my dremel to do some highlighting especially the foliage that was getting a bit lost with the patina process

Tarted up yesterday’s carving to try and balance the wonky grass tree (that’s where freehand gets you). Also mixed my own greens.

Please excuse my late reply. I just found your message.

Lovely pictures! Thank you for sharing. Haven’t been to the Bunya Mountains NP myself yet. Beautiful grasstrees! All with their tall spikes, really nice to see!

Fire-stimulated flowering
Byron Lamont has just sent me this pic of the spectacular flowering of grasstrees (Xanthorrhoea) in Western Australia burnt in March. Impressive spikes of up to 5 m tall.

Australian Grasses: A Guide to Native Grasses, Sedges, Rushes and Grasstrees, Second Edition

Describes ~270 species and forms, going beyond garden uses to consider these plants’ roles as habitat, adaptations to fire, and use by Indigenous peoples.

Australian Grasses
Native grasses, sedges and related plants are abundant in most Australian ecosystems, from Tasmania to the tropics, from coastal dunes to the snow line, and from grasslands to wetlands. With many of them as strikingly beautiful as the finest exotic grasses, they attract ever-increasing interest. They are widely planted to create a softer and more natural look, from bush gardens to more formal plantings, as drought-tolerant lawns or just for the pleasure of their shifting patterns in a strong wind. This fully revised and expanded second edition of Australian Grasses describes around 270 species and forms. Most of the photos are new and show each species in diverse settings, from wild places to farm dams, as dramatic specimens and as potted plants. The book goes beyond the garden uses of these plants to consider their roles as habitat, their adaptations to fire, their use by Indigenous peoples, and how some are even a significant genetic resource for improving edible grains.

A group of concerned people investigated Alcoa’s strip mining of Western Australia’s unique, biodiverse Jarrah forest for bauxite. Alcoa’s “restoration” of habitat is woefully inadequate.

It’s a crime scene. Silent & devoid of diversity. #Alcoa 💀 costs us more in perpetuity than we get in return.

I've been walking past this construction site nearly daily for over 3 years and it's been occupying this site since 2018, mostly as a giant concrete shed.

now, we get a lovely bit of open space and public art just in time for summer, and a brand new cross-city train tunnel 🥰🥰

It can reach 2m in height but most of that is the leaves, since it doesn’t have a visible trunk, unlike the better-known species of grasstree. Like the other grasstrees, the flowerspike is a very rich source of nectar and pollen.

More from my wildflower wander. Must remember to wear long trousers next time as I was wandering through the bush and saw my first snake for the season. A Dugite. Sorry, no pic. It did not want to hang around. Quite a good size. About 1.5m. They can be grumpy this time of year.
