In a dark corner of the verse was a #deadfall, an old style tavern called The Broken Arrow, where the barkeep snapped photos of the clientele with his false eye. Somebody rez the wizard." Jarl grimaced, his teeth had all been replaced by some precious metal, probably platinum. "You don't understand. He was born on a tiny moon near a dwarf star. I don't cover everything bad in Harry Potter because then we'd be here all day, but I cover the basics, contrasting it with my comfort series' and showing how easy it is to ditch HP once you notice how crappy it is in comparison. 2/3
Evil Races - While we're on a racism bit, let's talk about how Rowling handles other races. The ones we see anyway because lest you forget, there are vampires and mummies in the Wizarding World that never show up. The Centaurs don't do much plotwise, but they do drag Umbridge away to potentially r--e her. What the hell? The Dementors are basically just the Heartless or Grimm but with less presence. The Giants are just treated as dumb brutes for the most part, even Grawp is seen as pretty slow and Hagrid keeps him hidden in the forest. And the Goblins. Dear heavens, the Goblins. Everything I can say about them basically being caricatures of greedy Jews that run conspiracies has already been said, so I'm just gonna jump to my comparison, Super Mario Bros. Now I know what you're thinking, and yes, Mario worldbuilding is so ADHD, you'd swear Lemmy Koopa was writing it, but putting aside how Peach's kingdom has a different geological layout every other week, the games are pretty consistent in treating the races that usually serve under Bowser as more "Just doing their jobs and being pretty chummy outside it" than truly evil at their core. The Goombas deserve special mention since the original game characterized them as traitors to the Mushroom Kingdom (Probably because all the generic Toads that didn't have names or designs are pricks, just ask Luigi), but later games fleshed them out just as any other race in the games. You can find some surprisingly friendly ones in Bowser's ranks sometimes, and especially outside it, with Goombas that don't even work for Bowser (Goombella for instance). So yes, the waddling mushrooms are better written than Rowling's species are. Neurodivergency - Neurodivergent representation in media ranges from confirmed (Luz Noceda, Entrapta, Marcy Wu, etc.) to identified by fans (Lilo Pelakai, Ruby Rose, Uzi and N, etc.). Chances are if you hyperfixate on a series or character, they may or may not share a possible diagnosis with you. Not always, but I find it happens a lot. Harry Potter's possible neurodivergent rep comes in the form of Luna Lovegood, a fan favorite who's mistreated for her way of thinking, even by her fellow Ravenclaws. So what does Harry do? Takes her with him to Slugborn's party because he thinks she's weird and wants to see their reactions to her, does jack-all about her bullying (same with the teachers really, was Crouch-disguised-as-Moody really the only teacher to act on this stuff!?), and still thinks she's weird and you can't tell me he doesn't think that because we see the series from his persepective and read his thoughts. It's pretty callous treatment, speaking as an Autistic person myself, because I can find plenty of works that deal with this kind of stuff better, either showing the kind of effects ostracizing an autistic person for their interests can have (Lilo and Stitch) or just having the clearly autistic person be treated as an actual human that people would be friends with and not treat as a freak (Kingdom Hearts, RWBY, Puyo Puyo, etc.), but given Rowling says Autistic people are likely to be terrorists, it's not surprising she treats them like this. I've read that Newt Scamander's actor believes Newt is autistic, which I loved because I adored his character when I saw the first movie. Shame instead the sequels focused on the heroes trying to stop a Dumbledore's ex from stopping World War II. Queers - Speaking of people Rowling treats like crap, she seems to be on a mission to just alienate each letter in the LGBTQ+ community one-by-one, most prevaliantly trans people. Like neurodivergence, queer rep ranges from confirmed to speculated, but if fans vocally identify with a character as queer, maybe it's not the best choice to undo what made fans love that character and pair her up in a hetero marriage with a guy fans also read as gay (Which she did with Tonks and Lupin). Oh, speaking of that, werewolves, which in Harry Potter land, are basically just Rowling's take on AIDS. In that they turn people into monsters that attack those around them, and Fenrir Greyback likes spreading the infection, especially to children, Rowling what the fuck is in your water? Imma just list all the series off the top of my head with obvious queer characters that are handled better / looked upon more fondly than this, Legion of Superheroes (Brainiac-5), Paper Mario (Vivian), RWBY (Too many to count but Imma go with Blake, Ilia, and Yang), Kingdom Hearts (Also too many to count, Imma go with Riku), Puyo Puyo (Oshare Bones and Raffina), Murder Drones (Uzi and Lizzy), Lilo and Stitch (Pleakley and Jumba), Sonic the Hedgehog (Tangle and Whisper), Psychonauts (Helmut and Bob), Scott Pilgrim (Also too many to count, Roxie, Stephen and Wallace off the top of my head), and so much more. What do these all have in common? They don't portray their queer-coded characters as monsters like the aformentioned werewolves, or creepy, obviously trans-coded personal space invaders like Rita Skeeter. Femininity - A lot is said about how Rowling isn't too fond of overly feminine characters. Umbridge, who dresses in pink and is obsessed with cats? A bitch deserving of implied r--e. Skeeter, an ugly lady with girly attire? A heartless reporter who posts slander. Fleur Delacour, who I think is half-pretty-monster-lady? Not evil, but treated with scorn by the other girls like Hermione, Ginny, and even Molly in a way that I'm certain is just G-rated slutshaming. Now, admittedly, I'm a guy, but I've seen a lot of series handle feminine characters in many ways. A lot of them are really good at it, showing that you can still be strong or capable or just genuinely happy while being a girly girl (Sailor Moon, Pokemon, and Barbie off the top of my head), and works that probably could do a lot better (I swear, Melony is the only thing stopping me from just thinking SMG4 hates feminine characters), but something you should generally avoid when writing a feminine character is acting like them being feminine either makes them the dumbest thing alive or evil incarnate. I get it, feminine villains and bimbos exist, but Rowling weighs deep into "Not like other girls" territory with how she writes female interactions, and let me make this clear, that trope's bad, but not in the "Real women belong in the kitchen" way some basement dweller who's probably mourning their 4chan account will tell you, but in the "Treating girls liking girly things like they're idiots is mean" way. Like all humans, women deserve the right to be whatever personality they want to be, tomboy, girly-girl, anything in-between or outside those two, and for a claimed femininst, Rowling really likes just writing the Weasley girls and Hermione as resenting any woman that turns men's heads.
