#Leptember day 24 glorious Graylings
My go-to location for Graylings is on top of a coal spoilt tip high in the Welsh valleys, so my photos are usually of Graylings sitting on coal spoil but this year the butterflies had dispersed more widely so I got some lovely photos of them on wildflowers.

May not have survived the devastating fire 🔥 Along with many wildlife species scarce Silver-studded Blues & Graylings will be gone. Many years before they recover. Graylings will have to recolonise from areas already destroyed by Sizewell C @savebutterflies.bsky.social @sayno2sizewellc.bsky.social

Hardly any butterflies around now - probably too hot. However large numbers of Striped Graylings on my local patch (Monte Coto). #butterfly #butterflyphotography #butterflies #insects

I've a major soft spot for graylings of all kinds, and island endemic graylings are even more alluring! Spending some quality time with Madeiran Grayling this afternoon with my @mariposanature.bsky.social group was a joy from start to finish.

In the heat of the Vercors, France, these Woodland/Rock Graylings (Hipparchia fagi/alcyone) are desperate for moisture. My sweat was apparently a real treat for them! @europebutterfly.bsky.social

Graylings. Iridescent, eager. Around here they are a pleasant surprise

Sadly that’s the effects of Graylings ‘improvements’ and years of Tory underfunding.

Graylings having an average year on the Studland transects, but the grasses they lay on next to bare ground are all brown now. Not sure what the young larvae will feed on before they hibernate. @dorsetbutterflies.bsky.social @savebutterflies.bsky.social

When I started butterflying in the 1980s you could see hundreds or thousands of Graylings (heivlinder, H semele) on dry heathlands in August. It could be extremely abundant. But since then numbers went down and 2025 looks like a new low on Dutch Butterfly Monitoring transects.

Today's the graylings' adoptiversary. Shramps (and maybe also salmon) for everyone!

Reminded of when a friend and I started measuring all government waste/scandals in "Graylings," equivalent to around £3bn the approximate cost of his various failings across his ministerial portfolio.
From now on, when discussing the budget, please use “is this measure bigger than the cost to the exchequer of gen Z drinking less” as your metric for assessing whether something actually raises or costs a significant sum

Can we have an act of compassion please? We will never be allowed to rejoin the EU.

#WildWebsWednesday with the incredibly well camouflaged grayling #butterfly on the #GreatOrme at the weekend. This is a grayling thyone, a subspecies smaller than other graylings due to its location. @savebutterflies.bsky.social #NorthWales

Hiding in plain sight... we'll be seeing a lot of graylings of various kinds during our time in the Montes Universales in Spain later this summer, including Striped Grayling, owner of the best jagged, disruptive #butterfly camouflage in the business. They can melt unseen into dry, stony terrain...

In a speech yesterday about the probation service, the justice secretary Shabana Mahmood spoke sarcastically about the “glittering government career” of Lord Grayling, who was Conservative justice secretary from September 2012 to May 2015.

If there was one river that really deserved to be freed and restored, it is Kuusoja. Oja means 'ditch' in Finnish.

Oja is such an understatement about this glorious little river that still has decent water quality and even graylings!

Very good news. This alone made me happy today.

Positive news for the wee Kuusoja brook in Joensuu: the fishing rights holder wants to remove a fish migration obstacle and cancel the permit of an aquaculture farm.

There is a rare grayling population in the brook. It runs through drier forests. The area is nice for light hiking.
