#greenhushing
Let’s hope so. But working in climate communications, I’m very sceptical.

I think most companies will simply keep greenhushing instead.

Me too! I’ve been covering the green/climate beat for 3 decades and this is the 5th election where Dems have engaged in #climatesilence & #greenhushing!!! What could possibly go wrong? We get a deny-o-saur in the WH, twice🔥If Hillary had slammed #trump on it she’d have won! A missed opp. to educate!

Greenwashing is when you talk more than you actually achieve in sustainability and tend to experience lower stock returns.
Greenhushing is when you do more than you talk about publicly and tend to get higher stock returns due to improved bottom line.

A few years back, food companies made a lot of climate commitments. Now, as the conversation has shifted more towards personal health, companies have changed their messaging away from clean environment to clean eating. But does this shift mean companies have abandoned their sustainability efforts?

Many organizations fear U.S. federal backlash if they’re honest about their climate goals, so they’re engaging in what’s known as “greenhushing,” continuing to take climate actions but just not publicly sharing it.

5 to 10 years ago companies like Just Salad, Chipotle and Panera were appealing to public opinion by making big climate claims and commitments. Now many of these companies have gotten quiet. Is this just “greenhushing” or have they abandoned their commitments altogether?

Greenhushing?

When credible companies stop talking about what they’re actually doing, they leave a vacuum for misinformation and polarisation.

The answer isn’t louder claims; it’s clear, evidence-based transparency about real action and results.

Greenhushing: Climate silence doesn't mean inaction
Between the rise of MAHA Moms and “clean-eating” wellness influencers, there has been a shift in the way Americans are talking about food. Matters of personal health have dominated food conversations in recent years, with consumers encouraged to analyze every mouthful of a meal for harmful additives, or to consume more allegedly healthful ingredients, like beef tallow to replace supposedly toxic seed oils and turmeric to curb inflammation. But there was a time, in the not-so-long-ago mid-2010s, when the food sector was laser-focused on addressing a very different concern at the forefront of Americans’ consciousness: the need to meet the challenges of the climate crisis. From fast food restaurants to food ingredient manufacturers, companies started making hefty sustainability commitments to the public. Cargill promised to transition their farmers to regenerative ag practices; Nestlé promised to reduce deforestation in their supply chains; Chipotle promised to conserve water; Sodexo and Just Salad promised to lower their carbon emissions. “Global warming was definitely a really big factor in people starting to learn more about environmental impacts,” said Isaac Emery, project director at environmental consulting firm WSP, referring to the mood in the early 2000s. “They start thinking about where they see that in...
