Utah's largest coal-fired power plant—the Intermountain Power Project, located in the west desert near Delta and serving southern California—stopped burning coal at mid-day on Wednesday, just in time for Thanksgiving. 🔌💡

Even at high noon, mid-summer, US solar generation is still far from displacing fossil fuels. Lots of room for growth! 🔌💡

The curve for natural gas is above all of the others at every hour of every day, varying between morning lows and evening highs. Nuclear is steady, at about half the average level of gas. Solar fluctuates the most, but barely exceeds nuclear at mid-day and never comes very close to gas. Coal fluctuates in a similar way to gas, but is almost always a little below nuclear. Wind and hydro are also significant, while many other sources are far lower than any of these.

Utah's Intermountain Power Plant coal unit(s) still chugging along at ~500 MW, 2/3 of the way into the month in which they were, at last report, to be shut down (and replaced with two smaller gas units). Guess we'll see what happens on December 1. 🔌💡

Here's a chart of IPP coal generation over the last 30 days. I'm not sure why it was bouncing between such apparently hard limits of ~310 and ~640 MW during most of November. Each of the 2 coal units has a nameplate capacity of 820 MW. The plant ran at an average capacity factor of 40% in 2024.

The UK is currently not importing any gas from Norway via the Langeled pipeline.

This is unusual, but not uncommon as it happens a couple of times per year.

If you live near a coast, dynamic, virtual weather gauges located offshore focus in on rain as it approaches, giving you a countdown to when rain will start, and how bad it will be. It's all actually very clever!

Coal operates more flexibly that that in my neck o' the woods. Are you sure it couldn't operate more flexibly in India?

The main sources are coal, gas, solar, and wind. Coal's contribution fluctuates pretty abruptly in response to the big variations in solar (and wind to a lesser extent), with changes in coal generation by as much as a factor of 3 over about four hours.

Interesting that the new gas units are a few months behind schedule.

If I'm interpreting this chart correctly, IPP is still putting out a steady 200MW of coal-fired power.

I'm still puzzled about where the electricity for making hydrogen by Q2 2026 is supposed to come from.

Based on some reporting last year by @schotthappens.com when he was at @sltrib.com, I'd expected the two coal units at Utah's Intermountain Power Plant (which mostly serves southern CA) to shut off by the end of June. It didn't happen. Seems they intend to keep burning coal through the summer. 🔌💡

My understanding is that the only coal-fired power plant included in this data is Utah's Intermountain Power Plant. The chart shows a fairly steady power level of about 200 megawatts, with a few recent spikes, mostly during evening hours, that go as high as 600 megawatts. (This is a pretty low generation level for this plant, which has a maximum capacity of about 1600 MW.)

Because of the efforts of Democrats, from now on in the USA at 15:00 hours PV powered electricity will now be providing the second most power to the grids supplying the lower 48 states.

That's worth celebrating.
