It's on a Grindelia flower, aka gum weed due to the tacky exudate. Used in herbal medicine, mostly for the respiratory system.

looking directly into the face of a blooming composite flower with nearly two dozen bright yellow elliptic ray florets and dozens of bright yellow tubular 5-lobed disk florets which start blooming from the outer rows of the disk & work their way inwards. the outer row of disks has faded and several rows adjacent rows are now open. bright yellow pollen is scattered across the flowerhead. the rays are pistillate (female) while the disks are perfect (possess both stamens and pistils). the stamens of the disk florets are fused to form a tube through which the style protrudes. at the center of the disk, all the florets are just buds. the same flowerhead as in the previous photo, seen from the side. at the bottom of the pic is a vertical, smooth green stem with alternate green leaves. the leaves are linear to lance-shaped, and the sunlight catches one of them to illuminate the many resinous glands that dot the leaves' surfaces. the stem terminates in a flowerhead whose base is lined with around have a dozen series of spiky-looking thick but narrow phyllaries that curve upwards. the top row of these bracts angle outwards at their tips as well. the bright yellow rays beam out of the top of the flowerhead about 30° above horizontal; none of the disks are visible. narrowleaf gumweed growing among natural gravel and fieldstones in a limestone cedar glade, next to a tennessee coneflower which has yet to bloom. patches of grass eke out a living in the background. there are a number of gumweeds growing here, of various size and condition. the largest is towards the lower left & has a broken & brown main stem off which several green, flourishing branches grow. the reddish green stems bear alternate linear to lance-shaped green leaves & terminate in flowerheads with rows of spiky-looking green phyllaries, bright yellow rays, and a bright yellow disk.

Amateurs might get lured in by petals but this Dialictus knew better and went straight for the flower with just the good stuff. This isn’t slow motion - sticky flowers are tricky, but Grindelia is still wildly popular with most native bees. [Alameda, CA 8-8-26] #bees #nativebees

Of course we also did some botany, adding several new wildflower species. Oreocarya thyrsiflora (Limestone Cat's-Eye) had the best name, but Grindelia hirsutula (Hairy Gumweed) was very cool--each flower exuded milky sap 6/n

Sorry, none of the flowers that make nectar they like are flowering. My Grindelia is struggling, and my Monardella dropped all its flowers because of stress from Ligurian leafhoppers

Gumweed, Grindelia integrifolia, is a yellow, daisy-like flower atop a round, spiky, sticky base and red stems. In the centre of this one, two sweat bees are mating. (Solitary bees, they often mate in flowers.) The bees are black, smooth, with pale yellow patches on the abdomen.

Two trays with 24 mega sale plants I just got in during the cooler days last week including some Prunella practically bursting the containers so they got divided down into nice plugs. Pain has been constant all week but this is the only cooler day and more rain coming Friday/Saturday so I had to grind it out. Missing is the homegrown Cinna plugs.
