Unusually high hedges providing some shelter in this lane.
But buffeted by strong winds earlier in the week.

This bed is also doing well. The spineless prickly pear basically quadrupled in size this year, and the yucca next to the wall is almost up to my waist.

Sibling species! York Groundsel on the left, Welsh Groundsel on the right. I call them siblings because they evolved through hybrid speciation from the same parent species; Groundsel and Oxford Ragwort.

Both arose as brand new endemic species recently, probably in the last century and a half.

From the Temenos sculpture, Middlesbrough; possibly Common Ramping Fumitory? And a rayed Groundsel, which is probably the subspecies var.Hibernicus?

Most of the Suffolk sand quarry I monitored this week was very brown and crispy, but Common Evening-primrose, Sticky Groundsel (a member of the #DaisyFamily) and Panicled Willowherb were all doing just fine...

Fun science update here: this lovely creature is a new species! I didn't discover a new one, she's just got a new name because it turns out she's different than Perilampus hyalinus. Meet Perilampus seneca 💙💙

Highlight of the year was meeting Welsh Groundsel (Senecio cambrensis), an endearing but somewhat forgotten endemic evolved from a hybrid of Groundsel & Oxford Ragwort. Surveying the few remaining sites I found 153 plants. That’s the total world population, making it 16 times rarer than pandas.
