this skeet forced me to look up the science and i am gutted to learn that opossums might not actually eat tickets pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34298355/
Are Virginia opossums really ecological traps for ticks? Groundtruthing laboratory observations - PubMed
Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana) are a common synanthrope in North America, and serve as host to many species of ectoparasites. Research on captive Virginia opossums estimated that opossums ea...

Another beautiful day of groundtruthing for our #EnMAP.#SNSA project ... without sweating from start to finish under a hot sun.

A lovely day at Netley Park, where the first groundtruthing of the year took place - lots of quarries and pillboxes, but the focus was the series of lynchets forming earlier enclosures and field boundaries #lidar #groundtruthing #archaeology #surrey #volunteers #citizenscience #netley #nationaltrust

However, newer studies, like this one, studied wild possum stomachs and found NO ticks in them at all.

I'm so very excited that a paper I've been working on for literally years about groundtruthing the public sphere is FINALLY coming out (and in a decent journal). Sadly, the findings about data from social media (ie Twitter) will be pretty useless to researchers now.

I was sailing through the Northwest Passage as the First American in history in 2007 documenting the greatest loss of ice in known human history.
Groundtruthing the science. I have a great climate story that I share and work w scientists.

As part of the work of Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), USDA has canceled my research contract for a study titled Groundtruthing the Cost of the Thrifty Food Plan. It would have provided useful empirical information for federal anti-hunger policy. www.dtnpf.com/agriculture/...
USDA Contract Freezes Continue to Threaten Local Food Programs and Conservation Efforts
Members of the National Farmers Union and speakers at the group's national meeting questioned the legality of USDA canceling signed contracts and the ramifications for farmers from such actions. Meanw...

.@JamesHuttonInst and the @uniofnottingham.bsky.social were on the Cross Lochs peatland today, groundtruthing the landscape and checking the network of  water table loggers which contribute to European-wide modelling

No they won’t. That is a myth based on a flawed study. Doesn’t mean possums are bad, tho.

Bad info in, bad info out. This is well worth a read on dodgy data, AI and poor to no groundtruthing driving land management policy. @tonyjuniper.bsky.social
So this week in the world of farm/environment/land management/ mapping has been “interesting”

And by “interesting” I mean “verging on the utterly bonkers”

Why? Well this week started with Natural England launching a new map

"LLMs are routinely *benchmarked* on the *training set.*" is a sentence everyone needs to understand, but I'll throw in *overfitting* and *groundtruthing* (which must be understood as verb).

Most people have no idea how biodiverse deserts are. Years ago, I was part of a @nature.org team groundtruthing satellite imagery in the Malpais borderlands. We learned hundreds of species across this remarkable biological convergence zone of Madrean, great plains, rocky mtn, & SW desert habitats

The next blog in our series looking at the update of the Ancient Woodland Inventory is now live on our website: www.neyedc.org.uk/updates-insi.... This time, we're getting an insight into the survey techniques used on the ground to help verify potential 'new' ancient woodland 🌳
Updating the Ancient Woodland Inventory: Groundtruthing — neyedc
Carrying on from our previous blogs, our Ecological Surveyor, Claire Bending, talks about the next steps in the process of updating the Ancient Woodland Inventory (AWI) - on-the-ground surveys.
