We need epigenetic age estimates for groundtruthing!

this skeet forced me to look up the science and i am gutted to learn that opossums might not actually eat tickets pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34298355/
Are Virginia opossums really ecological traps for ticks? Groundtruthing laboratory observations - PubMed
Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana) are a common synanthrope in North America, and serve as host to many species of ectoparasites. Research on captive Virginia opossums estimated that opossums ea...

No they won’t. That is a myth based on a flawed study. Doesn’t mean possums are bad, tho.

how have I seen this post so many times without anyone yet pointing out that the thing about eating ticks is verifiably untrue and based on bad science

(be nice to them opossums anyways)

Psst...Opossums don't eat ticks (at least, not 5000 ticks per year).

Hennessy and Hild did work to validate the "opossums eat thousands of ticks" claim - both by performing some tests of their own, and digging through existing research into the matter.

Spoiler alert: They don't really eat ticks, let alone in the thousands.

The study that Cecilia Hennessy and Kaitlyn Hild performed, as the journal you linked discusses around.

"getting into the weeds of ERW MRV is beyond the scope here" is precisely what must be done: it's the calibration to *their* model, their own groundtruthing. It's the difference between modeling the average world and modeling their application with specific, real-world materials.

The next blog in our series looking at the update of the Ancient Woodland Inventory is now live on our website: www.neyedc.org.uk/updates-insi.... This time, we're getting an insight into the survey techniques used on the ground to help verify potential 'new' ancient woodland 🌳
Updating the Ancient Woodland Inventory: Groundtruthing — neyedc
Carrying on from our previous blogs, our Ecological Surveyor, Claire Bending, talks about the next steps in the process of updating the Ancient Woodland Inventory (AWI) - on-the-ground surveys.

The left would rather skirmish over whether we’ve done enough groundtruthing on anything that resembles a solution, with the only acceptable outcome of said groundtruthing being to impose a hukou system.

I honestly expected so much more groundtruthing in my #GIS career, lol! Happy to see you get to enjoy a little time out of the office ⛅️

Another beautiful day of groundtruthing for our #EnMAP.#SNSA project ... without sweating from start to finish under a hot sun.

Also not helping was SFUSD management, who declined to meet with its unions more than twice a month and failed to do any groundtruthing until late November 2020.

That's a great question. The study that showed that was flawed. We will eat ticks, just like other insects, but we aren't crazy, tick-eating machines.

Bad info in, bad info out. This is well worth a read on dodgy data, AI and poor to no groundtruthing driving land management policy. @tonyjuniper.bsky.social
So this week in the world of farm/environment/land management/ mapping has been “interesting”

And by “interesting” I mean “verging on the utterly bonkers”

Why? Well this week started with Natural England launching a new map
