In the workshop I have an apparatus called The Puller. This is how I pull tension on the drums we make and repair. The drum is held in place on a rotating base, while rope clamps attached to cables, pulleys, and pedals make the tensioning possible.

We have new drums in the works, hoping to finish up some new ones this week. In the meantime, we are going to share some of our favorite pics of our drums and various other products, all made in our workshop.

Celestine Ukwu: True Philosophy (Igede) (Nigeria 1971)
It starts with "Igede", highlife's loveliest moment, and scarcely gets less listenable from there. Transnational guitar styles combine seamlessly, and horns don't disturb the Igbo handdrums-&-shaker groove. Ukwu's xylophone tinkles and tickles.

Did you know? Animal skins from moose, deer, caribou, elk, or buffalo are used in making hand drums, depending on the local animals (National Arts Centre, n.d.)
This connection between drums and local animals reflects the deep relationship Indigenous peoples have with their environment!

The nurri (flautist) usually plays 2 reed flutes simultaneously, 1 as a drone & the other a quick ornamented melodic line. The groups can also have string instruments & handdrums at times.

And in some modern galician music called folktronica (new word for me, too) the handdrums still in use. Here the ladies of Tanxugueiras from galicia:

Fluff Your Stuff
From "Ritual Escape" comes the opening track, Fluff Your Stuff. I was supposed to be working on another project (an album of folk songs), but this one exploded from my creative center. Here's the musical framework for all the tracks on this suite: https://muz4now.com/2025/creating-through-limitations-scales-of-creation/ And here's the backstory: https://muz4now.com/2025/escape-may-be-an-option-ritual-escape/ All virtual instruments by Fluffy Audio and nearly all from Echoes of the Earth. Real instruments played by me.
