Had a student handwrite "Autobahn Bismarck" as part of an answer on a test. I wanted to give extra credit, but restrained myself.

I had absolutely no problem reading this but I am also 57 (i.e., "forced to learn cursive" years old) and also I myself actively mix standard and cursive letters when I handwrite things because I'm a weirdo like that

Malicious compliance can be fun.

1. Handwrite it in cursive.
2. Take a photo of the page.
3. Attach it to your email.

I am writing a new novel following the technique John Steinbeck used: handwrite muse and plotwork on the left page, handwrite the novel on the right page. I've never done much planning before and I'm hopeful this will work for me.

Everyone is making jokes about this, but I actually agree. I've done visits with high schoolers and been shocked that so many of them struggle to handwrite their own names. It's not about cursive exclusively. It's about fine motor skills, which our kids are losing.
Letting our kids be kids also means getting back to the basics. That’s why, earlier this year, I signed into law a bipartisan bill that requires cursive handwriting to be taught in Pennsylvania schools.

or at the very least, force them to handwrite tests and make the homework not count for much of the grade.

Don't even need to get them to handwrite: a computer that doesn't connect to the Internet is very much solved technology.

I had this exact argument with someone who made the "You'll get left behind! A person who uses a tool will always beat a person who doesn't use a tool!"

Yo, I handwrite all my edits instead of using the computer, and I do this because THAT IS THE BETTER TOOL for the job I need to do.
I have friends who write their manuscripts physically in notebooks while I write on my phone via cloud apps. I think this makes for a really good example that for creativity the idea of "IT'S INEVITABLE YOU'LL BE LEFT BEHIND" just comes from some really insecure people.

Learning to handwrite things is still important, y'all - especially your own name.
I didn’t believe it at first, either.

I handwrite a chatty letter to my Tory MP every Sunday morning. I never make specific demands. I just talk about how his party is disintegrating. And because it's on paper and arrives by post I know it gets read. I get replies, too. He's much less chatty than me.

If academic institutions want to grade students in a meaningful way, I suspect they will now need to go back to handwritten exams and oral tests only. If you can’t handwrite or speak, it’ll have to be done on a non-networked dumb machine. Maybe just a typewriter
“Massive numbers of students are going to emerge from university with degrees, and into the workforce, who are essentially illiterate…Both in the literal sense and in the sense of being historically illiterate and having no knowledge of their own culture, much less anyone else’s.”

To be clear, I'm not suggesting that we ax disability accommodations. If a student has dysgraphia or another condition that limits their ability to handwrite, we can find another solution that allows them to type without access to AI.

The rich are so incredibly privileged and arrogant that at no point did it concern them that it might not be ideal for them in the long run if they handwrite a letter about how fun it was touching all those little girls all those times they did that with this guy who everyone jokes is CIA
Imagine taking the time to draw some art for a sex trafficker’s birthday card.

When people start talking about making students handwrite assignments
ironically bluesky is extremely prone to weird fits of ableism when any component of disability manages to overlap with any of the platform's other major moral concerns, in spite of extensive lip service

URGENT REMINDER: Bluesky Social will be shutting down as a service on July 31, 2024. Please make sure to handwrite out any posts you care to keep. All user accounts will be archived and turned over to international criminal police after 11:59 PM PT.
