Hey, Harpagolestes.

This fossil friend is a mesonychid, extinct carnivorous mammals sometimes called “wolves with hooves.” Tooth wear hints that this beast regularly cracked and crushed bones as it fed on other creatures around 40 million years ago, in what’s now Wyoming. 🧪

Harpagolestes immanis, huge bone crunching mesonychid.
Sometimes people refer this beast by the funny name of “hyaena-pig”.

A few notes about this John Sibbick painting.

1) This piece features not just Andrewsarchus and Sarkastodon, but also Harpagolestes. They must be the brown carnivores on the left. Interestingly, they’re depicted in a group. Gonna be one helluva battle for the carcass.

happy #fossilfriday! this is mongolestes, a giant mesonychid from late eocene and early oligocene asia. mongolestes was one of the last mesonychids, and similar to the related harpagolestes, it was likely a bone-crunching scavenger around the size of a bear

along with the aforementioned harpagolestes, mongolestes and mongolonyx were some of the largest mesonychids, and most likely the first carnivorous mammals to become large-bodied apex predators

harpagolestes immanis
(mesonychidae, mesonychia)

the coloring was a challenge. and i think i made the tail too long, might have preferred a different ear shape too. but i tried, i think it’s okay!

Harpagolestes was a large mammal, roughly the size of a black bear, so you could give them a real good squeeze.

The notion Ankalagon (a mesonychid) was as huge as a grizzly, is based similarly on skull length, thus disregarding the postcranial proportions, of the mesonychid clade.

For what its, worth, Ankalagon wasn't uniquely massive among mesonychids; Harpagolestes skulls were comparably long.
