WTF! The Trump administration plans to review (with the intent to remove or eliminate) some of the nation’s wildlife refuges and fish hatcheries. Agency director Brian Nesvik ordered officials to identify refuges/hatcheries whose purpose the administration claims “no longer aligns with the mission.”

I have been thinking specifically about “8 hatcheries. 1 million fish. Countless memories.” all day
I was behind the Maine State Fisheries tank truck on my way to work today, which I know because it had a trout-themed wrap on it with the slogans “We stock Maine” and “8 hatcheries. 1 million fish. Countless memories.”

FWS Impact of the day: Did you know about our fisheries program?

Our fish hatcheries play an essential role in commercial fish production, maintaining Tribal trust responsibilities, and managing endangered species.

Most hatcheries have limited staff (understaffed).

Ditto. Replace parks with fish hatcheries, refuges, and endangered species staffs (to name a few).
Our parks are in chaos. We’ve seen firsthand how Trump’s hiring freeze, the rescinding of hundreds of job offers, and the layoff of 5% of NPS staff have left us overwhelmed and short-handed.

The Ojibwe tribes have often been criticized for harvesting too much walleye, but evidence shows they stock much more walleye than they remove.

Almost a dozen hatcheries in Puget Sound are in limbo because a single NOAA employee was terminated by DOGE in February.

That employee was Krista Finlay and her job at NOAA was to ensure hatcheries complied with the Endangered Species Act before the fish were released into Puget Sound.

FWS update from multiple sources:

Planning scenario due tomorrow for 10%, 20%, and 40% reductions.

All programs (hatcheries, ecological services, refuges, migratory birds) are expected to be impacted, although maybe at differing levels.

Fire and law enforcement seem to be excluded. (Who knows?)

Great blue herons sometimes congregate around fish hatcheries. While this could pose a problem to the hatcheries, a study found that since ailing fish tended to be stay at the surface, the herons mostly ate fish that would have died shortly anyway.

Lavish is what we do daily! (Dripping with sarcasm).

Our fish hatcheries do not have enough staff, and that was before the illegal terminations. We got approval to purchase fish food, but who will do the work?

There is nothing lavish about our operations. Come visit, we are open.
What are the “lavish fish studies” the U.S. government is supposedly wasting dollars on? Maybe doge thinks that people are bedazzling fish? Or maybe it’s the critical efforts by USFWS and USGS to monitor invasive and endangered species in communities we all rely on? Any insight @altfws.altgov.info ?

Imagine that, raise a NATIVE fish in hatcheries that significantly combats invasive species.
Recreational angling is important, but I think we could consider repurposing some of our current Brown Trout/non-native Rainbow Trout hatchery efforts…
Since they're native to most of the St. Lawrence and Mississippi watersheds, I wonder if an aquaculture program for these guys would help. They're pretty common already, but if there we caused a population boom to deal with the mussels, that would equalize over time since they're native.

Feel hesitant and conflicted about learning to fish now after learning that all the places you can fish here are all stocked yearly from hatcheries... If I'm taking food from the land I want it to be sustainable. Maybe this is the year I can learn about shellfish foraging

If you've wondered "Everyone's saying there's price gouging in eggs but WHAT DOES THAT ACTUALLY MEAN," this article is for you!

It's a consolidated industry with very few hatcheries.

They can restrict the # of egg-laying birds they raise to keep prices high. And that's exactly what they're doing.

Kobold facts: kobolds are raised in hatcheries that are, for lack of a better word, disorganized. Most kobolds have several moms-some who are even dragons!-and are grateful to all of them for their lessons, wisdom and nurturing throughout their years.
