We have many different salmon events in many different places bc each salmon run & each place has its own unique story, lessons, and history.

On Issaquah Creek, we learn about the importance and pitfalls of hatcheries. At Ballard Locks, we learn about settler-colonial conquering of waterways.

I've heard of commercial fishing concerns that off shore wind farms limit the areas they can trawl.

But also those same prohobitions create hatcheries to help repopulate overfished areas nearby.

Coming from a hometown full of salmon fishers, hatcheries (including raising them in my grade school classes), I may also have a salmon bias 😋 I grew up eating it cooked and smoked, sometimes candied, but now I prefer it raw as nigiri or in rolls. But I also love hamachi, shrimp, & scallops ☺️

Also it was my impression that institutional inertia kinda keeps money flowing into hatcheries rather than habitat conservation/restoration

Power in European poultry does not sit mainly with the people raising birds. It sits further up the chain with a handful of companies controlling the points through which birds become food: feed, hatcheries, contracts, slaughterhouses, processing plants […]

He's trying to get out. Around him, the others are being dropped in.

Male chicks can't lay eggs, so hatcheries kill them within a day of hatching.

It happens by the hundreds of millions a year, in nearly every egg-producing country.

Italy has officially ended one of the egg industry’s most criticized practices. Starting in 2026, hatcheries must use technology that identifies a chick’s sex before it hatches. This means male chicks will no longer be culled after birth. 🇮🇹
